Ford EcoSport (2014-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Cheap to run and affordable to buy	Doesn't deliver the sharp drive you'd expect of a Ford
Good choice of petrol and diesel engines	Irritating side-opening tailgate
Improved interior after 2018 facelift	Early cars weren't well equipped

Quick Summary

The Ford EcoSport (2014-present) is a compact SUV that initially disappointed upon launch, as Ford adapted a South American model for European markets. Early versions suffered from dated styling, uninspiring driving dynamics, and an awkward interior, with the peculiar side-opening tailgate proving particularly impractical. However, Ford responded positively, and the 2018 facelift brought significant improvements, including a modern interior, refreshed exterior, and enhanced driving characteristics that made the car far more competitive and appealing.

The EcoSport offers decent practicality with 356 litres of boot space (expanding to 1,238 litres with rear seats folded) and a variable-height boot floor. Frugal engines—particularly the efficient diesels and capable EcoBoost petrols—keep running costs low, whilst servicing is affordable. The post-2018 models feature improved infotainment with Ford SYNC3, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. Despite these improvements, the EcoSport remains less refined and engaging than rivals like the SEAT Arona or Ford Puma, making used examples a more sensible proposition than new purchases.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable compact SUV with low running costs, those prioritising practicality and engine choice, and drivers willing to compromise on driving dynamics for value.

Not ideal for: Buyers expecting Ford's renowned driving dynamics, those requiring a conventional upward-opening tailgate, or those seeking a modern, refined driving experience comparable to newer rivals.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the EcoSport if: You're seeking an affordable compact SUV with low running costs, prioritise engine choice and practicality, and are willing to compromise on driving dynamics for value.

Consider alternatives if: You expect Ford's renowned driving dynamics, require a conventional upward-opening tailgate, or seek a modern, refined driving experience comparable to newer rivals.

Competitive Position: The Ford EcoSport (2014-present) occupies an awkward middle ground in the compact SUV market. Whilst the 2018 facelift brought meaningful improvements, it still trails more refined rivals like the SEAT Arona in driving engagement and interior quality. The Nissan Juke offers stronger user satisfaction, whilst the Peugeot 2008 provides better value for money. However, the EcoSport's affordability, low running costs, and diverse engine options make it a pragmatic choice for budget-conscious buyers. Used examples represent better value than new purchases, particularly post-facelift models with the improved interior and driving characteristics.
