Ford EcoSport (2014-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Cheap to run and affordable to buy | Doesn't deliver the sharp drive you'd expect of a Ford |
| Good choice of petrol and diesel engines | Irritating side-opening tailgate |
| Improved interior after 2018 facelift | Early cars weren't well equipped |
Quick Summary
The Ford EcoSport (2014-present) is a compact SUV that initially disappointed when launched, as Ford attempted to capitalise on the booming small SUV market by adapting a model originally designed for its South American division. The early cars suffered from dated styling, an uninspiring interior, and driving dynamics that lacked the verve expected of a Ford. However, the company responded positively, with a major facelift in 2018 significantly improving the vehicle's competitiveness and appeal. The updated models feature a far more modern interior and exterior design, bringing them much closer to European rivals.
The EcoSport offers decent practicality with 356 litres of boot space (expanding to 1,238 litres with rear seats folded), though the side-opening tailgate is an annoying quirk requiring space behind the vehicle. The smooth turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engines are preferable to the diesel options, delivering around 40mpg in real-world driving. Running costs are low, with affordable servicing and tax, making it an economical choice. Post-2018 models are significantly better propositions than earlier versions, though the EcoSport still trails smarter, sleeker rivals like the Ford Puma and SEAT Arona in overall appeal and driving dynamics.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable compact SUV with low running costs and decent equipment levels, particularly those opting for post-2018 facelift models.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising sharp handling and dynamic driving experience, those requiring a conventional upward-opening tailgate, or buyers seeking a premium interior feel.

| Ford EcoSport | 2/5 | 4.6/5 | 38.0% | 4.1/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the EcoSport if: You're on a budget seeking an affordable compact SUV with low running costs and decent equipment levels, particularly opting for post-2018 facelift models.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sharp handling and dynamic driving experience, require a conventional upward-opening tailgate, or seek a premium interior feel.
Competitive Position: The Ford EcoSport (2014-present) occupies a challenging position in the compact SUV market. Whilst it offers excellent value and low running costs, it falls short of rivals like the SEAT Arona in refinement and driving dynamics, and lacks the premium appeal of more expensive competitors. The 2018 facelift significantly improved the proposition, making post-facelift models far more competitive. However, the EcoSport remains best suited to budget-conscious buyers prioritising affordability and practicality over driving engagement. For those willing to stretch their budget slightly, the SEAT Arona or Ford Puma offer superior overall packages, though the EcoSport's low costs and decent equipment make it a sensible choice for value-focused purchasers.

Overall, drivers of the Ford EcoSport appreciate its comfortable ride, spaciousness, and economical value. Many favor its ease of access and a nice set of features, though there are critiques regarding the performance of the engine, particularly noting that some find it a bit sluggish. The unique boot door design is a point of contention as some find it inconvenient. Despite these concerns, most owners find the EcoSport to be a good choice for city driving and casual outings.

What people say
Comfortable entry, smooth ride, plenty of extras, eg reversing camera
An excellent choice for the older driver. Easy access no unnecessary stooping or bending. Easy loading of luggage etc. controls nicely laid out and not overly complex or confusing.
Nice car, not keen on the way the tail gate opens, however worth the money.
I would highly recommend this model to anyone looking for an all round car / suv. Specification are high, comfort is second to none & value for money.Sent Easy to get used to, just take time to get used to the on-board computer & if connecting another device ie:phone make sure your Android is linked correctly. All being said a must have vehicle.
A great car so much better than the fiesta it’s based on
