Ford Fiesta Mk7 (2018-2023) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Fun to drive	Very patchy reliability record
Affordable running costs	Not as roomy inside as some rivals
Impressive Ecoboost engines	ST-Line models have a stiffer ride than the rest of the range

Quick Summary

The Ford Fiesta Mk7 (2018-2023) is one of Britain's best-loved superminis, renowned for its engaging driving dynamics and well-executed design. This seventh-generation model represents arguably the best iteration yet, offering a wide range of trim levels from practical runabouts to sporty ST performance variants, including Active models with raised SUV-style suspension. With 292 litres of boot space and available five-door configuration, it provides reasonable practicality for families and commuters, though some rivals offer more passenger and cargo space. The interior quality is good, though some plastic elements feel less premium than competitors.

The Fiesta excels in driving enjoyment, with nimble handling, precise steering, and slick manual gearboxes across the range. The turbocharged Ecoboost engines deliver impressive fuel efficiency and performance, with the 1.0-litre variants achieving around 51-56mpg depending on specification. Running costs are affordable and servicing is reasonably priced. However, the model's reliability record is patchy, and it doesn't come with as much safety equipment as expected. Ford discontinued Fiesta production in 2023, meaning all available examples are used cars, though high demand keeps prices relatively firm compared to rivals.

Best for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling and driving enjoyment, those seeking affordable running costs, and buyers wanting a well-engineered supermini with multiple trim options.

Not ideal for: Buyers requiring maximum interior space, those prioritising reliability, or those seeking the latest safety technology as standard.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Fiesta if: You prioritise engaging handling and driving enjoyment, seek affordable running costs, or want a well-engineered supermini with multiple trim options to suit different needs.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum interior space, prioritise reliability, or need the latest safety technology as standard on all trims.

Competitive Position: The Ford Fiesta Mk7 is a strong contender in the supermini market, offering superior driving dynamics compared to most rivals. Whilst the Volkswagen Polo provides a more premium feel and the Renault Clio offers more boot space, the Fiesta's engaging handling and affordable running costs make it an excellent choice for enthusiast drivers. However, its patchy reliability record and limited safety equipment mean it's worth comparing with rivals before purchasing. The Vauxhall Corsa offers better value for budget-conscious buyers, though it lacks the Fiesta's driving engagement.
