Ford Mondeo Mk4 (2014-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Affordably priced as a used car | Interior feels dated |
| Engaging to drive and comfortable to travel in | Not as roomy as a Skoda Superb |
| Wide choice of engines | Hybrid model isn't as economical as rivals |
Quick Summary
The Ford Mondeo Mk4 (2014-2022) continued the model's legacy as a strong contender in the family car segment, known for its sparkling driving dynamics. Launched in 2014, it offered a wide range of EcoBoost petrol and Duratorq diesel engines, available in five-door hatch, estate, and an economical hybrid in four-door saloon or estate guises. Despite its strengths, Ford ceased European production in 2022 due to declining sales in favour of SUVs.
This generation is a large, roomy, and practical car, offering ample head and legroom, and generous boot space (654 litres for the hatchback, 755 litres for the estate). The driving experience is comfortable and refined, though it lost some of the dynamic edge of predecessors. Running costs are generally low, especially for diesel and hybrid variants, with Ford offering service plans. While the interior can feel dated compared to rivals, its affordability as a used car makes it a sensible choice.
Best for: Drivers wanting a large, practical, and sensibly priced family or executive car; those seeking a comfortable and engaging driving experience; and buyers looking for a car with low running costs.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising a modern interior, those needing the absolute largest boot space (especially for hybrid estate), or those seeking the ultimate dynamic handling of earlier Mondeos.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

| Ford Mondeo | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 30.2% | 4.3/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Mondeo if: You're on a budget, seeking a large, practical, and sensible family or executive car, or looking for a comfortable and engaging driving experience with low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise a modern interior feel, require the absolute largest boot space (especially with the hybrid estate), or seek the ultimate dynamic handling of earlier Mondeos.
Competitive Position: The Ford Mondeo Mk4 (2014-2022) remains a strong option in the used large family car market, offering excellent value, practicality, and a comfortable yet engaging driving experience. While newer rivals like the Skoda Superb or VW Passat might offer a more upmarket feel or larger boot space, and its infotainment can feel dated, the Mondeo's affordability, wide engine choice, and generally low running costs make it a highly sensible and appealing choice, particularly for budget-conscious buyers.

(47 reviews)The car would be great value it runs smoothly and for the time I had it it was comfortable to drive
Very good car for what it is reliable and comfortable plus better then german rivals cheap er to fix.
Car is exactly as required but I feel it is overpriced
Really liked the features on this Mondeo and having owned similar but older models I am impressed. Especially liked the fact that there is a tow bar already in place. The interior trim/seats and tech are an upgrade to my current model.
Great all round family sized car with a huge boot. 2.0tdi is awesome, especially if you need to tow a trailer/caravan. Make sure the cam belt has been replaced on high milers, also check the ac is working. Ive owned 4 over the years, all diesels and never let me down.
