Ford Ranger (2011-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Healthy payload and a big loadbed	Low-quality cabin before 2015 facelift
First pick-up to score five stars for safety from Euro NCAP	Beware of fragile oil pumps
Handles well for such a big workhorse	Not as civilised as a VW Amarok

Quick Summary

The Ford Ranger (2011-2020) is the UK's most popular pick-up truck, offering a compelling blend of practicality, capability, and all-round performance. Available in three body styles—Regular Cab, Super Cab, and Double Cab—it provides flexibility for both commercial and personal use. The Double Cab configuration is ideal for most buyers, offering genuine five-seat capacity whilst maintaining a generous loadbed that accommodates standard euro pallets. All versions feature a payload capacity exceeding 1,000kg (except the Raptor), making them genuine workhorses. The 2015 facelift brought significant improvements, including modern styling, a smarter cabin closer to SUV standards, and updated engines, making post-facelift models more enjoyable to own and cheaper to run.

The Ranger excels as a pick-up truck, handling with more precision and resisting body roll more convincingly than rivals from Nissan and Mitsubishi, though the VW Amarok and Mercedes-Benz X-Class offer greater refinement. Engine options range from 2.2-litre and 3.2-litre turbodiesels (pre-2019) to 2.0-litre EcoBlue units (2019 onwards) with 130hp, 170hp, or 210hp outputs. Fuel economy varies from around 25mpg with the 3.2-litre to mid-30s with four-cylinder versions. The range-topping Raptor offers bespoke suspension and exciting driving dynamics, whilst all versions deliver strong towing capacity (3,500kg braked trailer limit for most). Running costs are reasonable for a vehicle of its size, with annual road tax at a flat £140 rate for light commercial vehicles and servicing costs around £250 for major services at Ford dealers.

Best for: Commercial users seeking tax incentives, buyers needing genuine load-carrying capacity and towing ability, and those wanting a capable all-rounder that handles better than typical pick-ups.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising cabin refinement on pre-2015 models, buyers seeking the smoothness of a VW Amarok, or those concerned about potential oil pump fragility.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Ranger if: You need genuine load-carrying capacity and towing ability, seek commercial vehicle tax incentives, or want a pick-up that handles better than most rivals.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise cabin refinement, prefer the smoothness of a VW Amarok, or are concerned about potential oil pump issues on older examples.

Competitive Position: The Ford Ranger (2011-2020) stands as the UK's favourite pick-up truck, offering superior handling and all-round capability compared to rivals like the Nissan Navara and Toyota Hilux. Whilst the VW Amarok and Mercedes-Benz X-Class deliver greater refinement and civility on the road, the Ranger provides exceptional value and practicality for commercial users and those requiring genuine workhorse credentials. Its five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, healthy payload capacity, and strong towing ability make it a compelling choice. The 2015 facelift significantly improved the cabin quality and running costs, making post-facelift models particularly attractive. For buyers seeking a durable, reliable, and capable all-rounder, the Ranger remains an excellent proposition.
