Honda Civic (2016-2021) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Dependable family transport | Frustrating infotainment |
| The Type R hot hatch is tremendous fun | Interior quality could be better |
| Choice of frugal engines | Regular models are rather ordinary to drive |
Quick Summary
The Honda Civic (2016-2021), the tenth generation of this iconic nameplate, offers flamboyant styling and practical family transport. With a spacious 478-litre boot and generous rear kneeroom, it provides excellent passenger accommodation. The raked roofline gives it a sportier appearance than typical family hatchbacks, whilst remaining a five-door configuration. Engine options include turbocharged 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre petrol units, plus a 1.6-litre diesel, all delivering strong performance and impressive fuel economy. The manual gearbox is particularly pleasant to use, and the Civic offers a happy balance between easy motorway manners, supple ride comfort, and predictable handling.
Running costs are very competitive, with the diesel achieving over 60mpg and the 1.0-litre petrol managing 45-50mpg in real-world use. Insurance groups range from 15 to 22, making it affordable to insure. The main drawbacks are an underwhelming infotainment system and interior quality that lags behind rivals like the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. However, the Type R variant is a brilliant, usable performance hatch that rivals the Ford Focus ST. As a used car, the Civic represents good value, though it depreciates slightly faster than some competitors.
Best for: Families seeking dependable, practical transport with frugal engines, those wanting a comfortable daily driver with comprehensive safety equipment, and performance enthusiasts considering the Type R variant.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising premium infotainment systems or superior interior quality, those seeking the finest driving dynamics, or those wanting a car that holds its value exceptionally well.

The Verdict
You should buy the Civic if: You're seeking dependable, practical family transport with frugal engines, want comprehensive safety equipment as standard, or are interested in the exceptional Type R performance variant.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium infotainment systems, superior interior quality, the finest driving dynamics, or a car that holds its value exceptionally well.
Competitive Position: The Honda Civic (2016-2021) is a worthy and practical family hatchback that drives well and offers some of the most frugal engines in its class. However, it faces stiff competition from the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus, which offer better infotainment systems, superior interior quality, and more engaging driving dynamics. The Civic's major weakness is its underwhelming media interface and patchy interior finish. That said, it remains a dependable choice with excellent safety equipment, comfortable accommodation, and impressive fuel economy. The Type R variant is a tremendous performance option that rivals the Ford Focus ST. For budget-conscious buyers seeking practical, affordable family transport, the Civic represents good value, though it depreciates slightly faster than some rivals.

What people say
fantastic car, delivered clean and professionally. very happy with the seller and car :)
The car was good value and performs well. Seat position is tight for a short person. Also, to read the displays means lifting the seat position which means thighs gets closer to the steering wheel. Rear spoiler splits rear windscreen, which takes a bit of getting used to. Overall, I am pleased to have purchased it.
A bit slow in 1st and 2nd gear Pulling away
The mk10 1.5 sport is a great car, has loads of extras . This is my second one and my son has also bought one.
Having owned a Honda Civic for the last 10 years, we do know how good they are, so we decided to stick with the same model type, our new car is a dream car, it has every thing you need for safety and comfort, and ease to drive
