Honda HR-V Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Clever Magic Seats in the rear | Small boot by class standards |
| Lots of standard equipment | Hybrid powertrain feels unresponsive |
| Low running costs | Cramped rear headroom |
Quick Summary
The Honda HR-V is a sensible small hybrid SUV that sits between the smaller Ford Puma and larger Nissan Qashqai in the competitive small SUV market. Available exclusively as a self-charging petrol-electric hybrid, it offers a sophisticated cabin with generous standard equipment, including climate control, heated front seats, adaptive cruise control and a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The standout feature is the clever Magic Seats in the rear, which fold and flip to maximise cargo space in creative ways. However, the 1.5-litre hybrid powertrain delivers modest performance with 129bhp, taking 10.6 seconds to reach 62mph, and the 319-litre boot is small for the class.
The HR-V excels in comfort and refinement, with an impressively honed suspension that absorbs bumps well and feels settled on motorways. Running costs are competitive, with official fuel economy of 52.3mpg and modest tax savings compared to petrol alternatives. The cabin is solidly built with a grown-up design, though some hard plastics appear where softer materials might be expected. With prices starting below £40,000, the HR-V offers good value, but limited performance, poor engine refinement and cramped rear headroom mean it's not the best all-rounder in its class.
Best for: Buyers prioritising comfort, equipment and clever practicality features, those seeking low running costs, and families who value the innovative Magic Seats.
Not ideal for: Drivers wanting responsive performance, those needing maximum boot space, or passengers over six feet tall who require generous rear headroom.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honda HR-V | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 31.2% | 4.2/5 |
| Volkswagen T-Roc | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 34.3% | 4.3/5 |
| Nissan Juke | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.7% | 4.2/5 |
| Toyota C-HR | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 35.6% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the HR-V if: You prioritise comfort, generous standard equipment and clever practicality features, seek low running costs, or value the innovative Magic Seats for flexible cargo space.
Consider alternatives if: You want responsive performance, need maximum boot space, or require generous rear headroom for taller passengers.
Competitive Position: The Honda HR-V is a solid contender in the small SUV market, offering excellent comfort, quality and standard equipment at a competitive price. Whilst it trails the Volkswagen T-Roc and Toyota C-HR for expert ratings and lacks the driving dynamics of its rivals, the HR-V's unique Magic Seats, low running costs and generous specification make it an appealing choice for comfort-focused buyers. However, its modest performance, small boot and cramped rear headroom mean it's not the best all-rounder, and buyers seeking more dynamic handling or space should consider the T-Roc or C-HR instead.

5 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Smart styling, comfortable, fantastic array of electronic features, economic and super to drive.
This car drives smoothly and has a lot if sensors which accounts for safety.
Previous car: 2006- Honda Civic 1.8 petrol 150 hp EX - Now - 2019 Honda HRV 1.5 petrol 230hp - yes its slightly slower but during the acceleration you can hear this pleasant growl. You sit higher than in Civic and the sits are more comfortable . Much more gadgets then in Civic ( parking sensors, camera, info systems , sat na, electric mirrors the lot) No manual hand break like in Civic. Space for your feet - space for your left foot next to the clutch but no space next to the acceleration pedal - Civic the other way around. Ride comfort - big improvement but no car is perfect - you will still feel bumps on the road, pot holes and things like that. Ride it self though is more comfy than in Civic. Noise - much quieter than Civic but still you can hear outside noise - its not uncomfortable but it could be better. In the city you probably wont even notice but on the motorway you will. General space inside the HRV - I think its more space - front and back. You sit there like on the couch or armchair. Plenty of space for your legs and your head. HRV is higher than Civic so if you are 180-190 cm you should be fine. Trunk - same as Civic. Gear lever - shorter than Civic. More pleasant just on the right level. What I am missing is control knobs for radio, air con etc. Info systems is all by touch or on the steering wheel. Good visibility from the back and front. For me HRV is like Civic on steroids. Bigger, higher more comfortable.
Very happy with this model. Drives well , it’s comfortable and spacious.
Fuel efficient, comfortable, heated seats high specification, easy to drive
