Previous car: 2006- Honda Civic 1.8 petrol 150 hp EX - Now - 2019 Honda HRV 1.5 petrol 230hp - yes its slightly slower but during the acceleration you can hear this pleasant growl. You sit higher than in Civic and the sits are more comfortable . Much more gadgets then in Civic ( parking sensors, camera, info systems , sat na, electric mirrors the lot) No manual hand break like in Civic. Space for your feet - space for your left foot next to the clutch but no space next to the acceleration pedal - Civic the other way around. Ride comfort - big improvement but no car is perfect - you will still feel bumps on the road, pot holes and things like that. Ride it self though is more comfy than in Civic. Noise - much quieter than Civic but still you can hear outside noise - its not uncomfortable but it could be better. In the city you probably wont even notice but on the motorway you will. General space inside the HRV - I think its more space - front and back. You sit there like on the couch or armchair. Plenty of space for your legs and your head. HRV is higher than Civic so if you are 180-190 cm you should be fine. Trunk - same as Civic. Gear lever - shorter than Civic. More pleasant just on the right level. What I am missing is control knobs for radio, air con etc. Info systems is all by touch or on the steering wheel. Good visibility from the back and front. For me HRV is like Civic on steroids. Bigger, higher more comfortable.

Honda HR-V Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Clever Magic Seats in the rear | Small boot by class standards |
| Lots of standard equipment | Hybrid powertrain feels unresponsive |
| Low running costs | Cramped rear headroom |
Quick Summary
The Honda HR-V is a sensible small hybrid SUV that offers impressive comfort, quality, and generous standard equipment. Its standout feature is the fiendishly clever Magic Seats in the rear, which fold and flip ingeniously to maximise cargo space and versatility. The hybrid powertrain delivers respectable fuel economy of 52.3mpg and low running costs, whilst the well-appointed cabin features a user-friendly 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, climate control, and comprehensive safety kit as standard. Suspension is impressively honed, absorbing bumps and potholes with ease, and the car feels settled on motorways.
However, the HR-V has notable drawbacks that prevent it from being a class leader. The hybrid powertrain feels unresponsive, with sluggish acceleration that requires burying the throttle pedal to keep pace with traffic. Rear headroom is cramped, particularly in the middle seat, and the boot is small for the class at just 319 litres. Whilst it's a decent car worthy of consideration, particularly if you value the innovative rear seats and standard equipment, there are better all-rounders available elsewhere in the small SUV market.
Best for: Buyers seeking a well-equipped, comfortable small SUV with clever interior practicality, low running costs, and hybrid efficiency.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising performance, spacious rear headroom, large boot capacity, or the finest driving dynamics in the small SUV class.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honda HR-V | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 32.1% | 4.2/5 |
| Volkswagen T-Roc | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 35.7% | 4.3/5 |
| Nissan Juke | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.6% | 4.2/5 |
| Toyota C-HR | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 34.0% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the HR-V if: You value clever interior practicality, comprehensive standard equipment, low running costs, and hybrid efficiency in a comfortable small SUV.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise performance, spacious rear headroom, large boot capacity, or the finest driving dynamics in the small SUV class.
Competitive Position: The Honda HR-V is a well-equipped and comfortable small SUV with innovative Magic Seats and low running costs. Whilst it matches rivals like the Nissan Juke on expert rating and the Toyota C-HR and Volkswagen T-Roc on overall value, it falls short on performance and rear practicality. The VW T-Roc and Toyota C-HR offer better driving dynamics and more spacious interiors, making them stronger all-rounders for most buyers. However, the HR-V remains a sensible choice for those prioritising clever design, standard equipment, and hybrid efficiency over outright performance.
