Previous car: 2006- Honda Civic 1.8 petrol 150 hp EX - Now - 2019 Honda HRV 1.5 petrol 230hp - yes its slightly slower but during the acceleration you can hear this pleasant growl. You sit higher than in Civic and the sits are more comfortable . Much more gadgets then in Civic ( parking sensors, camera, info systems , sat na, electric mirrors the lot) No manual hand break like in Civic. Space for your feet - space for your left foot next to the clutch but no space next to the acceleration pedal - Civic the other way around. Ride comfort - big improvement but no car is perfect - you will still feel bumps on the road, pot holes and things like that. Ride it self though is more comfy than in Civic. Noise - much quieter than Civic but still you can hear outside noise - its not uncomfortable but it could be better. In the city you probably wont even notice but on the motorway you will. General space inside the HRV - I think its more space - front and back. You sit there like on the couch or armchair. Plenty of space for your legs and your head. HRV is higher than Civic so if you are 180-190 cm you should be fine. Trunk - same as Civic. Gear lever - shorter than Civic. More pleasant just on the right level. What I am missing is control knobs for radio, air con etc. Info systems is all by touch or on the steering wheel. Good visibility from the back and front. For me HRV is like Civic on steroids. Bigger, higher more comfortable.

Honda HR-V Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Clever Magic Seats in the rear | Small boot by class standards |
| Lots of standard equipment | Hybrid powertrain feels unresponsive |
| Low running costs | Cramped rear headroom |
Quick Summary
The Honda HR-V is a sensible small hybrid SUV that competes in the hugely congested small SUV sector, sitting between smaller rivals like the Ford Puma and larger competitors such as the Nissan Qashqai. The third-generation model arrived in 2021 and received a light facelift in 2024. It stands out as one of relatively few cars in the class offered exclusively in petrol-electric self-charging hybrid form, combining smart styling with generous standard equipment. The HR-V features the clever Magic Seats found in the Honda Jazz, which fold ingeniously to maximise cargo space and can flip upwards to accommodate tall items.
Performance is the HR-V's Achilles heel, with the 1.5-litre hybrid powertrain delivering just 129bhp and feeling unresponsive in everyday driving. Rear headroom is cramped, and the boot is small at 319 litres, though it expands to 1,305 litres with seats folded. However, the suspension is impressively refined, the cabin is solidly built, and the infotainment system is significantly improved over the previous generation. Running costs are competitive, with official fuel economy of 52.3mpg and modest tax savings compared to petrol alternatives. The HR-V is well-equipped across all trims, from the entry-level Elegance with climate control and parking sensors to the Advance Plus with panoramic sunroof.
Best for: Buyers prioritising comfort, quality, and clever interior design; those seeking low running costs and generous standard equipment; families who value the innovative Magic Seats.
Not ideal for: Drivers needing strong performance or responsive acceleration; those requiring maximum boot space; passengers over six feet tall who need adequate rear headroom.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honda HR-V | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 33.4% | 4.2/5 |
| Volkswagen T-Roc | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 41.6% | 4.4/5 |
| Nissan Juke | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 37.5% | 4.2/5 |
| Toyota C-HR | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 34.2% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the HR-V if: You prioritise comfort, quality, and clever interior design; seek low running costs and generous standard equipment; or value innovative Magic Seats for versatile cargo handling.
Consider alternatives if: You need strong performance, responsive acceleration, maximum boot space, or adequate rear headroom for taller passengers.
Competitive Position: The Honda HR-V is a decent all-rounder in the small SUV market, offering genuine comfort, quality construction, and fiendishly clever rear seats that are a real work of art. Its generous standard equipment and low running costs make it competitive with rivals like the Toyota C-HR and Nissan Juke. However, limited performance, poor refinement, and cramped rear headroom prevent it from being a standout choice. The Volkswagen T-Roc offers superior driving dynamics and more deals available, whilst the Toyota C-HR provides better overall balance. For most car buyers, there are better all-rounders available elsewhere in the small SUV segment, though the HR-V remains worthy of consideration if its strengths align with your priorities.
