Honda HR-V Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Clever Magic Seats in the rear | Small boot by class standards |
| Lots of standard equipment | Hybrid powertrain feels unresponsive |
| Low running costs | Cramped rear headroom |
Quick Summary
The Honda HR-V is a sensible small hybrid SUV that sits between the smaller Ford Puma and larger Nissan Qashqai in the market. Available exclusively as a petrol-electric self-charging hybrid, it offers a sophisticated cabin with generous standard equipment, including climate control, heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, and a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The standout feature is the clever Magic Seats in the rear, which fold and flip to maximise cargo space and accommodate tall items. However, the 319-litre boot is small for the class, and rear headroom is cramped for taller passengers.
The 1.5-litre hybrid powertrain produces 129bhp and delivers an official fuel economy of 52.3mpg with 112g/km CO2 emissions. Performance is modest, with 0-62mph taking 10.6 seconds, and the engine can feel unresponsive when pushed. The suspension is well-tuned and comfortable, though the car isn't designed for spirited driving. Running costs are competitive, and the HR-V is priced below £40,000, avoiding the expensive car supplement on road tax. Overall, it's a well-equipped, comfortable car with clever practicality features, though it lacks the performance and all-round ability of some rivals.
Best for: Buyers seeking a comfortable, well-equipped small SUV with clever interior solutions, low running costs, and hybrid efficiency; those prioritising comfort and standard equipment over performance.
Not ideal for: Drivers needing strong performance, maximum boot space, or generous rear headroom; those seeking a more engaging driving experience or preferring conventional petrol or diesel engines.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honda HR-V | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 32.2% | 4.2/5 |
| Volkswagen T-Roc | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Nissan Juke | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.3% | 4.2/5 |
| Toyota C-HR | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 34.1% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the HR-V if: You prioritise comfort, generous standard equipment, and clever interior solutions; you want a hybrid-only small SUV with low running costs; or you value a well-built, sophisticated cabin.
Consider alternatives if: You need strong performance, maximum boot space, generous rear headroom, or prefer conventional petrol or diesel engines; you seek a more engaging driving experience.
Competitive Position: The Honda HR-V is a competent small SUV that excels in comfort, equipment, and practicality through its innovative Magic Seats. However, it faces stiff competition in a crowded market. The Volkswagen T-Roc and Toyota C-HR both score higher with experts and offer better all-round ability, whilst the Nissan Juke matches the HR-V's expert rating but offers different styling appeal. The HR-V's hybrid-only powertrain is a unique selling point, but its modest performance and small boot limit its appeal compared to rivals offering more conventional drivetrains and greater versatility. For buyers specifically seeking a hybrid small SUV with excellent equipment and comfort, the HR-V is a strong choice; for others, alternatives may offer better value and practicality.

5 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Smart styling, comfortable, fantastic array of electronic features, economic and super to drive.
This car drives smoothly and has a lot if sensors which accounts for safety.
Previous car: 2006- Honda Civic 1.8 petrol 150 hp EX - Now - 2019 Honda HRV 1.5 petrol 230hp - yes its slightly slower but during the acceleration you can hear this pleasant growl. You sit higher than in Civic and the sits are more comfortable . Much more gadgets then in Civic ( parking sensors, camera, info systems , sat na, electric mirrors the lot) No manual hand break like in Civic. Space for your feet - space for your left foot next to the clutch but no space next to the acceleration pedal - Civic the other way around. Ride comfort - big improvement but no car is perfect - you will still feel bumps on the road, pot holes and things like that. Ride it self though is more comfy than in Civic. Noise - much quieter than Civic but still you can hear outside noise - its not uncomfortable but it could be better. In the city you probably wont even notice but on the motorway you will. General space inside the HRV - I think its more space - front and back. You sit there like on the couch or armchair. Plenty of space for your legs and your head. HRV is higher than Civic so if you are 180-190 cm you should be fine. Trunk - same as Civic. Gear lever - shorter than Civic. More pleasant just on the right level. What I am missing is control knobs for radio, air con etc. Info systems is all by touch or on the steering wheel. Good visibility from the back and front. For me HRV is like Civic on steroids. Bigger, higher more comfortable.
Very happy with this model. Drives well , it’s comfortable and spacious.
Fuel efficient, comfortable, heated seats high specification, easy to drive
