Hyundai Ioniq 6 (2023-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Individual looks	Ride is decidedly firm
Pleasant to drive	Some disappointing pieces of interior trim
Stuffed with equipment and technology	Wing mirror cameras are a bit pointless

Quick Summary

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is a battery electric vehicle that competes with premium four-door electric executive cars such as the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4. Inspired by 1930s aeroplanes, this 'streamliner' features a sleek, bullet-shaped profile with exceptional aerodynamics of 0.21cD. Available with rear-wheel drive delivering 225bhp and up to 338 miles of WLTP range, or dual-motor all-wheel drive with 321bhp and 322 miles of range, the Ioniq 6 offers impressive efficiency and practicality. Its 2.95-metre wheelbase provides abundant passenger space, whilst the 800V charging system enables rapid charging at up to 220kW, achieving a 10-80% charge in approximately 18 minutes.

The Ioniq 6 combines futuristic design with retro styling details and cutting-edge technology, including vehicle-to-load charging, a heat pump for improved winter range, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Rear passenger space is exceptional, though headroom may be tight for those over 6ft tall. Boot space is adequate, with underfloor storage and a useful frunk on rear-wheel drive models. Real-world efficiency of around 3.8m/kWh translates to approximately 281 miles of range in mild conditions, with charging costs as low as 4p per mile on off-peak tariffs. Whilst the ride can feel firm and some interior trim feels less premium than rivals, the Ioniq 6 remains an appealing, well-equipped, and efficient electric executive car.

Best for: Buyers seeking a distinctive, technologically advanced electric executive car with excellent efficiency, strong equipment levels, and good value for money compared to premium rivals.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising the softest ride comfort, the most premium interior materials, or access to extensive charging networks like Tesla Superchargers.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Ioniq 6 if: You're seeking a distinctive, technologically advanced electric executive car with excellent efficiency, strong equipment levels, and good value for money compared to premium rivals.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the softest ride comfort, the most premium interior materials, or access to extensive charging networks like Tesla Superchargers.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is a compelling contender in the electric executive car market, offering exceptional efficiency, innovative technology, and distinctive styling at a competitive price point. Whilst the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4 score marginally higher on expert ratings and user satisfaction, the Ioniq 6 delivers superior value and a more individual design. Its 800V charging system, vehicle-to-load capability, and impressive real-world range make it an excellent choice for those prioritising practicality and technology. However, buyers seeking the ultimate in ride comfort or premium interior quality may prefer the BMW i4 or Mercedes-Benz EQE.
