Hyundai IONIQ (2017-2022) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Choice of electrified powertrains	Not much fun to drive
Futuristic styling	Sloping roofline compromises rear headroom
Low running costs	Fidgety ride of EV and PHEV models

Quick Summary

The Hyundai IONIQ (2017-2022) is a versatile family hatchback available in three electrified powertrains: self-charging hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and fully electric (EV). Its sleek, aerodynamic design sets it apart from more conventional rivals, with a swooping roofline and subtle character lines creating an elegant appearance. Introduced in 2017 and facelifted in 2019, the IONIQ offers a light and airy interior with high-quality soft-touch materials, comfortable supportive seats, and excellent visibility. The hybrid's 443-litre boot is spacious, whilst the electric and PHEV variants offer 350 and 341 litres respectively, all impressive for their class.

The IONIQ excels in efficiency and running costs, with the hybrid achieving 83.1mpg officially, the PHEV offering 31 miles of electric range, and the EV delivering 174-193 miles depending on the model year. Driving dynamics are composed and capable rather than thrilling, with light but accurate steering and well-contained body roll. The electric model provides the smoothest driving experience with instant acceleration, whilst the hybrid and PHEV feature dual-clutch gearboxes that can exhibit slight jerkiness during petrol-to-electric transitions. Post-facelift cars benefit from improved ride quality and a more responsive infotainment system. Insurance groups range from 10 to 17 depending on the variant.

Best for: Environmentally conscious families seeking lower motoring costs, those transitioning to electric vehicles, and buyers prioritising efficiency and practicality over driving excitement.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging handling or sporty performance, taller passengers requiring generous rear headroom, or those planning frequent motorway journeys in the EV variant.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the IONIQ if: You're environmentally conscious, seeking lower motoring costs, transitioning to electric vehicles, or prioritising efficiency and practicality over driving excitement.

Consider alternatives if: You desire engaging handling, sporty performance, generous rear headroom, or plan frequent motorway journeys in an EV variant.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai IONIQ (2017-2022) is a strong contender in the electrified family hatchback market, offering three powertrain options to suit different needs and budgets. Whilst rivals like the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 and Toyota Prius may offer slightly higher user ratings, the IONIQ's versatility, futuristic styling, and low running costs make it an excellent choice for environmentally conscious families. The electric variant provides an affordable entry point into EV ownership, though the Nissan Leaf offers better value deals. Overall, the IONIQ represents a sensible, practical, and efficient family car with genuine environmental credentials.
