Hyundai Inster (2025-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Versatile interior	Similarly sized rivals are cheaper
Impressive range	A Renault 5 is more fun to drive
Cute styling	No wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto

Quick Summary

The Hyundai Inster is a compact electric car that punches well above its weight in terms of interior versatility and space. Based on the Hyundai Casper and adapted for European tastes, it features distinctive pixelated styling, a choice of two battery sizes (42kWh or 49kWh), and impressive WLTP range of up to 229 miles. Despite its dinky proportions, the Inster offers clever packaging with sliding and fold-flat rear seats, foldable front seats, and underfloor storage for charging cables. It seats four people comfortably and transforms into a tiny van when needed, making it a masterclass in practical design.

The Inster is a gem to drive, offering nimble handling and light steering perfect for town driving, though performance is relaxed with 0-62mph times of 10.6-11.7 seconds depending on battery choice. Ride comfort is excellent on UK roads thanks to well-controlled suspension, and the variable brake regen system with one-pedal mode is a nice touch. Even the base model comes well equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen, digital driver's display, and proper physical buttons for easy operation. Running costs are incredibly low at around 2p per mile with home charging, and the Inster 02 adds premium features like LED lights, heated seats, and vehicle-to-load charging capability.

Best for: Buyers seeking a compact electric car with clever interior design, impressive range, and solid equipment levels; those who value versatility and practicality in a small package; drivers with access to home charging.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking the cheapest compact EV; those prioritising performance and fun driving dynamics; users requiring wireless smartphone integration as standard.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Inster if: You value versatile interior design, impressive range, and solid equipment in a compact electric car; you have access to home charging; you seek a practical and characterful small EV.

Consider alternatives if: You're seeking the cheapest compact EV option, prioritising performance and fun driving dynamics, or requiring wireless smartphone integration as standard.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai Inster is a clever, comfortable, and characterful compact electric car that stands out for its versatile interior and impressive range. Whilst the Renault 5 offers more fun and driving excitement, and the Citroen e-C3 provides greater comfort, the Inster strikes an excellent balance between practicality, technology, and value. It's more expensive than some rivals like the Leapmotor T03, but the superior interior design, better range, and more refined driving experience justify the premium. For buyers seeking a compact EV with brains and charm, the Inster should be at or near the top of their shortlist.
