Hyundai Kona (2023-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Roomy, practical cabin | Merely so-so to drive |
| Great infotainment system | Cabin could feel posher |
| Generous standard equipment | Should be more comfortable |
Quick Summary
The second-generation Hyundai Kona is a larger and more practical mini-SUV with bold, futuristic styling. Responding to feedback on the previous model, it now boasts a generous 466-litre boot and significantly more passenger space, making it a strong family contender. The high-tech interior features an excellent twin-screen infotainment system, though the cabin is finished with a number of hard plastics. It is offered with a choice of petrol and efficient self-charging hybrid powertrains.
While practical and well-equipped, the Kona's driving dynamics are average. The ride can feel unsettled on imperfect roads, and the handling isn't as sharp as some key rivals. The 1.0-litre petrol engine is adequate for most drivers, and the hybrid version delivers impressive fuel economy of over 60mpg. However, the more powerful 1.6-litre petrol can feel unrefined, and the car's over-eager audible safety alerts can be intrusive. Nevertheless, its high level of standard equipment from the entry-level model upwards makes it a compelling value choice.
Best for: Buyers who prioritise practicality, generous standard equipment, a user-friendly infotainment system, and the low running costs of the hybrid model.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking a comfortable ride or engaging handling, those wanting a premium-feeling cabin, or anyone easily irritated by frequent audible safety warnings.

The Verdict
You should buy the Kona if: You're looking for a practical and spacious small SUV that is packed with modern technology and generous standard equipment.
Consider alternatives if: A comfortable, settled ride and dynamic, fun handling are your top priorities, or you dislike intrusive safety alerts.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai Kona (2023-present) is a highly competitive entry in the small SUV class, excelling in practicality, technology, and standard equipment. While it doesn't offer the most comfortable ride or the most engaging drive compared to rivals like the Ford Puma, its spacious interior, large boot, and efficient hybrid option make it a compelling and sensible choice for families and tech-savvy buyers.
