Hyundai Kona Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Roomy, practical cabin	Merely so-so to drive
Great infotainment system	Cabin could feel posher
Generous standard equipment	Should be more comfortable

Quick Summary

The Hyundai Kona is the second-generation incarnation of Hyundai's popular mini-SUV, featuring futuristic angular styling and significant growth compared to its predecessor. The car has expanded by 14 centimetres in overall length and 6 centimetres in wheelbase, resulting in a genuinely roomy 466-litre boot and improved rear-seat passenger space. A range of powertrains is available, including a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, a more powerful 1.6-litre turbo petrol, and a self-charging 1.6-litre petrol-electric hybrid. The cabin features twin screens, a responsive infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and solid build quality, though hard surfaces dominate the interior.

Dynamically, the Kona is very average, with light and vague steering, noticeable body roll, and an unsettled ride that struggles with surface imperfections. The 1.0-litre engine is willing and perky, whilst the 1.6 turbo with automatic transmission feels dysfunctional, and the hybrid offers smooth refinement with respectable efficiency. Running costs vary by powertrain: the 1.0-litre achieves around 48mpg, the 1.6 turbo around 44mpg, and the hybrid exceeds 60mpg. Insurance groups range from 22-23 for the smaller engines to 30-33 for the turbo. As a practical, well-equipped family SUV with compelling value, the Kona excels for those prioritising space and equipment over dynamic engagement.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, practical SUV with generous equipment and a strong infotainment system, and company car drivers considering the hybrid or electric versions.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising dynamic handling, a premium cabin feel, or superior ride comfort, or those seeking the finest driving experience in the compact SUV class.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Kona if: You're seeking a spacious, practical SUV with generous equipment and a strong infotainment system, or a company car driver considering the hybrid or electric versions.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise dynamic handling, a premium cabin feel, superior ride comfort, or the finest driving experience in the compact SUV class.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai Kona is a very decent all-rounder in the compact SUV segment, offering generous passenger space, a large luggage compartment, solid build quality, generous equipment, and a cracking infotainment system. Whilst it's dynamically very average with so-so handling and an unsettled ride, its compelling ownership package and value proposition make it worth considering for those prioritising practicality and equipment over dynamic polish. The Kona Electric variant is particularly impressive, earning a four-star overall rating. Rivals like the Kia Niro and Audi Q2 offer comparable ratings, though the Kona stands out for its spaciousness and user satisfaction.
