Hyundai Kona (2026) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Roomy, practical cabin | Merely so-so to drive |
| Great infotainment system | Cabin could feel posher |
| Generous standard equipment | Should be more comfortable |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai Kona is a second-generation compact SUV that has grown significantly compared to its predecessor, offering improved practicality and passenger space. With a generous 466-litre boot and a well-designed interior featuring twin screens and an intuitive infotainment system, it delivers solid build quality and comprehensive standard equipment across all trim levels. The Kona offers multiple powertrain options, including a turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol, a more powerful 1.6-litre turbo, and a self-charging hybrid variant that achieves over 60mpg.
Whilst the Kona excels in space, equipment, and value, it's dynamically average with uninspiring handling, an unsettled ride, and some powertrain inconsistencies. The interior, whilst well-assembled, lacks premium feel with hard surfaces in key areas. Running costs vary by engine choice, with the hybrid offering the best fuel economy and lower company car tax. The Kona Electric variant deserves special mention, earning a four-star rating. Overall, it's an excellent all-rounder for buyers prioritising practicality and equipment over dynamic polish.
Best for: Families seeking spacious, practical transport with generous equipment and a strong infotainment system; buyers valuing comfort and practicality over driving dynamics; company car drivers considering the hybrid or electric variants.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising sharp handling and engaging dynamics; those seeking a premium interior feel; buyers wanting a particularly comfortable ride quality.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyundai Kona | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.5% | 4.3/5 |
| Ford Puma | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 31.2% | 4.5/5 |
| Volkswagen T-Roc | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 41.6% | 4.4/5 |
| Kia Niro | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 32.0% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Kona if: You prioritise spacious, practical transport with generous equipment and a strong infotainment system; you value comfort and practicality over driving dynamics; you're a company car driver considering the hybrid or electric variants.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sharp handling and engaging dynamics, seek a premium interior feel, or require particularly comfortable ride quality.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai Kona is a strong contender in the compact SUV segment, offering excellent space, practicality, and equipment at competitive prices. Whilst the Ford Puma edges ahead with superior driving dynamics and the Volkswagen T-Roc offers better value for money, the Kona's generous cabin, intuitive infotainment, and comprehensive standard features make it an excellent all-rounder. The Kia Niro shares the same platform but offers different styling and positioning. For buyers prioritising practicality and equipment over dynamic polish, the Kona represents outstanding value, particularly in hybrid or electric form.
