Hyundai Kona (2023-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Roomy, practical cabin | Merely so-so to drive |
| Great infotainment system | Cabin could feel posher |
| Generous standard equipment | Should be more comfortable |
Quick Summary
The second-generation Hyundai Kona (2023-present) is a spacious and practical compact SUV that has grown significantly compared to its predecessor. It features a generous 466-litre boot with a useful square shape, improved rear-seat space, and a well-designed interior with an excellent twin-screen infotainment system. The Kona offers a range of powertrains including a turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol, a more powerful 1.6-litre turbo petrol, and a petrol-electric hybrid option. Build quality is solid throughout, and equipment levels are generous even on entry-level trims.
Whilst the Kona excels in practicality and comfort, its dynamic performance is merely average, with light and vague steering, noticeable body roll, and an unsettled ride that struggles with surface imperfections. The 1.6 turbo petrol with automatic transmission is particularly problematic, offering unpredictable power delivery. The hybrid version is the most refined and efficient option, achieving over 60mpg, whilst the 1.0-litre petrol manages around 48mpg. Insurance groups range from 22-23 for the smaller engines to 30-33 for the 1.6 turbo. The Kona Electric variant deserves special mention, earning a four-star rating and offering exceptional company car tax benefits at just 2% BIK.
Best for: Families prioritising space, practicality, and equipment over driving dynamics; those seeking a well-equipped, reliable SUV with strong infotainment; and company car drivers considering the electric version.
Not ideal for: Drivers who value sharp handling and responsive steering; those seeking a premium interior feel; or buyers prioritising ride comfort on varied road surfaces.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyundai Kona | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 35.7% | 4.3/5 |
| Volkswagen T-Roc | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 35.7% | 4.3/5 |
| Ford Puma | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 36.1% | 4.6/5 |
| Kia Niro | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 35.8% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Kona if: You prioritise space and practicality, seek generous equipment and a strong infotainment system, or want a reliable family SUV with low running costs (especially the hybrid).
Consider alternatives if: You value sharp handling and responsive steering, require a premium interior feel, or prioritise ride comfort on varied road surfaces.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai Kona (2023-present) is a competent all-rounder that excels in practicality, space, and equipment but falls short dynamically compared to rivals. Whilst the Ford Puma edges ahead with superior handling and a five-star rating, and the Kia Niro offers similar practicality, the Kona remains a sensible choice for families prioritising comfort and value. The Volkswagen T-Roc matches it on overall rating but offers a more premium feel. The Kona's strength lies in its generous standard equipment, excellent infotainment, and compelling ownership package, making it an attractive proposition for budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious, reliable SUV.
