Hyundai Kona (2023-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Roomy, practical cabin | Merely so-so to drive |
| Great infotainment system | Cabin could feel posher |
| Generous standard equipment | Should be more comfortable |
Quick Summary
The latest Hyundai Kona (2023-present) is the second generation of Hyundai’s popular mini-SUV, featuring futuristic angular styling and significantly increased size compared to its predecessor. It offers a range of powertrains including conventional petrol and petrol-electric hybrid options, but no plug-in hybrid. This review focuses on the combustion-engined models, as the electric version is a distinct and notably impressive offering. The Kona competes in a crowded market against rivals like the Ford Puma and Skoda Kamiq, but its increased dimensions place it at the roomier end of the compact SUV segment, alongside cars such as the Kia Niro and VW T-Roc.
Hyundai addressed previous practicality concerns by growing the Kona, resulting in a roomy 466-litre boot and ample rear passenger space. The interior features a modern twin-screen infotainment system, physical climate controls, and solid build quality, though some surfaces are hard. Driving dynamics are generally average; the 1.0-litre petrol is sprightly, but the 1.6 turbo can be dysfunctional with the automatic gearbox. The hybrid is smooth and efficient. Ride comfort is only so-so, feeling fidgety on varied surfaces, and the car is notable for its relentless safety system alerts. Running costs are competitive, with the hybrid offering over 60mpg, and generous standard equipment across all trims.
Best for: Buyers prioritising generous passenger and luggage space, a modern infotainment system, solid build quality, and comprehensive standard equipment. Also good for those seeking competitive running costs (especially the hybrid) and a practical family car.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging handling, a consistently comfortable and settled ride, premium interior materials, or those who find constant safety system alerts disruptive.

The Verdict
You should buy the Kona if: You prioritise generous passenger and luggage space, a modern infotainment system, solid build quality, and comprehensive standard equipment. Also for those seeking competitive running costs and a practical family car.
Consider alternatives if: You seek engaging handling, a consistently comfortable and settled ride, premium interior materials, or find constant safety system alerts disruptive.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai Kona (2023-present) stands out in the compact SUV market for its significantly improved practicality, spacious cabin, large boot, and generous standard equipment. While its driving dynamics are considered average, with an unsettled ride and light steering, it offers solid build quality and an excellent infotainment system. Its range of powertrains, particularly the efficient hybrid, contributes to competitive running costs. The Kona presents a strong value proposition, especially for those prioritising space and features over dynamic polish, positioning it as a highly sensible and well-equipped choice within its segment.
