Hyundai i40 (2011-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Relaxing to drive on the motorway	Utilitarian cabin finish
Roomy cabin	Driving position could be more comfortable
Affordable to buy and run	Not as good to drive as a Ford Mondeo

Quick Summary

The Hyundai i40 (2011-2019) is an overlooked family saloon and estate that offers exceptional value for money. Intended as a rival to the Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Insignia, and Skoda Superb, it combines a comfortable, refined ride with a spacious, well-equipped cabin. Available as both a saloon and versatile Touring estate, the i40 excels on motorways where its composed handling and low noise levels shine. A 2015 facelift brought refreshed styling, revised trim levels, updated engines, and a twin-clutch gearbox option, making later models even more appealing.

Most examples are powered by a smooth 1.7-litre turbodiesel engine, available in 113bhp, 134bhp, or 139bhp outputs, delivering impressive fuel economy of up to 65.7mpg. The cabin is well-appointed across all trims, with entry-level models featuring air-con, Bluetooth, and electric windows, whilst higher trims add leather, panoramic roofs, and heated seats. Running costs are low, with affordable insurance and servicing from around £100. Weak residual values make the i40 exceptional value as a used purchase, though this may impact resale. With generous standard equipment and fuss-free family motoring, the i40 represents outstanding value for budget-conscious buyers.

Best for: Families seeking comfortable, refined motorway cruising, budget-conscious buyers wanting excellent value, and those prioritising practicality and low running costs over driving excitement.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking premium cabin quality comparable to a VW Passat or Mazda 6, those wanting engaging driving dynamics, or buyers concerned about resale values.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the i40 if: You're seeking comfortable, refined motorway cruising, want excellent value for money, or prioritise practicality and low running costs over driving excitement.

Consider alternatives if: You desire premium cabin quality comparable to a VW Passat or Mazda 6, seek engaging driving dynamics, or are concerned about weak resale values.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai i40 (2011-2019) is an outstanding value proposition in the family saloon segment. Whilst it may not match the Ford Mondeo's driving dynamics or the Mazda 6's premium feel, its combination of affordability, refinement, spaciousness, and low running costs makes it an exceptionally sensible choice for budget-conscious families. The i40's weak residual values work in the used buyer's favour, offering superlative value. For those prioritising comfort and practicality over prestige or performance, the i40 represents one of the best bargains in the used family car market.
