Hyundai i40 (2011-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Relaxing to drive on the motorway | Utilitarian cabin finish |
| Roomy cabin | Driving position could be more comfortable |
| Affordable to buy and run | Not as good to drive as a Ford Mondeo |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai i40 (2011-2019) is an overlooked family saloon and estate that offers exceptional value for money. Launched as a replacement for the Sonata, it competes with the Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Insignia and Skoda Superb. Available as a practical Touring estate or traditional saloon, the i40 excels at motorway cruising with its comfortable ride, excellent refinement and spacious cabin. A 2015 facelift brought refreshed styling, revised trim levels, updated engines and a twin-clutch gearbox option. With family car sales declining, the i40 was withdrawn in 2019 with no direct replacement planned.
Most examples are powered by a smooth 1.7-litre turbodiesel engine in either 113bhp or 134bhp (later 139bhp) guises, delivering impressive fuel economy of up to 65.7mpg. Petrol options include a sluggish 1.6-litre and a more capable 2.0-litre GDi, though these are less common. All models come well-equipped with air-con, Bluetooth and electric windows as standard. Later facelift cars add touchscreen sat-nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The i40 is an easy, fuss-free car to live with daily, though its utilitarian cabin finish and lifeless steering lack the refinement of premium rivals. Weak residual values make it exceptional value as a used buy, though this impacts resale prospects.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious, comfortable family car for daily commuting and motorway driving, and those prioritising practicality and low running costs over driving excitement.
Not ideal for: Drivers wanting premium cabin quality, engaging handling, or strong resale values, or those uncomfortable with the driving position.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyundai i40 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 29.4% | 4.1/5 |

| Ford Mondeo Mk4 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 31.9% | 4.3/5 |
| Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport | 3/5 | 3.7/5 | 32.0% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the i40 if: You're seeking a spacious, comfortable family car for daily commuting and motorway driving, prioritising practicality and low running costs over driving excitement, or looking for exceptional value as a used buy.
Consider alternatives if: You want premium cabin quality, engaging handling, strong resale values, or a more comfortable driving position.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai i40 (2011-2019) is a strong contender in the used family saloon market, offering outstanding value and practicality. Whilst it lacks the driving dynamics of the Ford Mondeo and the premium feel of the Mazda6, its affordability, spacious cabin, motorway refinement and low running costs make it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers. The weak residual values that make it such a bargain as a used car do mean resale prospects are limited, but for those seeking fuss-free, comfortable family motoring, the i40 represents superb value.

(7 reviews)I am a long time owner (12 years) of a Hyundai i40 estate. The vehicle has travelled 173,000 miles since new and I cannot fault it in any department. I am now looking for a younger i40 as I have been so impressed with the vehicle. It has been the most reliable and safe vehicle I have owned in the last 12 years.
I absolutely adore this car only thing missing is a sat nav, it’s similar drive to a Vauxhall insignia or ford mondeo
Very stylist, a lot of car for the money. Drives and comfort is exceptional, the blue drive model is only £30 road tax a year.
Good car, plenty of toys, 56mpg. Fits 3 car seats in the rear!
Lovely car to look at inside and out. Has every gadget on board you could ever need! Very smooth to drive - highly recommended ; )
