I am a long time owner (12 years) of a Hyundai i40 estate. The vehicle has travelled 173,000 miles since new and I cannot fault it in any department. I am now looking for a younger i40 as I have been so impressed with the vehicle. It has been the most reliable and safe vehicle I have owned in the last 12 years.

I absolutely adore this car only thing missing is a sat nav, it’s similar drive to a Vauxhall insignia or ford mondeo

Very stylist, a lot of car for the money. Drives and comfort is exceptional, the blue drive model is only £30 road tax a year.

Hyundai i40 (2011-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Relaxing to drive on the motorway | Utilitarian cabin finish |
| Roomy cabin | Driving position could be more comfortable |
| Affordable to buy and run | Not as good to drive as a Ford Mondeo |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai i40 (2011-2019) is an overlooked family saloon and estate that offers exceptional value for money. Intended as a rival for the Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Insignia and Skoda Superb, it debuted in 2011 and received a subtle facelift in 2015 with refreshed looks, revised trim levels, updated engines and a new twin-clutch gearbox option. The i40 excels at motorway cruising, delivering a comfortable ride and excellent refinement, whilst remaining practical for everyday duties like school runs and shopping trips.
Most examples are powered by a smooth 1.7-litre turbodiesel engine available in 113bhp, 134bhp or 139bhp outputs, delivering impressive fuel economy of up to 65.7mpg. Petrol options include a sluggish 1.6-litre and a more punchy 2.0-litre GDi, though these are less common. All models come well-equipped with standard features, and insurance premiums are affordable. Weak residual values make the i40 exceptional value as a used buy, though this may impact resale. The cabin finish is utilitarian rather than plush, and the driving position could be more comfortable, but for sensible, fuss-free family motoring, it's hard to beat.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious, comfortable family car; those prioritising motorway refinement and running costs; families wanting practical, reliable transport.
Not ideal for: Buyers wanting premium cabin quality or badge appeal; those seeking engaging driving dynamics; drivers prioritising residual values.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyundai i40 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 29.2% | 4.1/5 |
| Mazda6 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.8% | 4.2/5 |
| Ford Mondeo Mk4 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 30.3% | 4.3/5 |
| Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport | 3/5 | 3.7/5 | 31.3% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the i40 if: You're seeking a spacious, comfortable family car on a budget; prioritising motorway refinement and low running costs; wanting practical, reliable transport without premium pricing.
Consider alternatives if: You desire premium cabin quality and badge appeal, engaging driving dynamics, or strong residual values.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai i40 (2011-2019) represents outstanding value in the used family car market. Whilst the Ford Mondeo Mk4 offers superior driving dynamics and the Mazda6 provides better overall refinement, the i40's significantly lower purchase price and running costs make it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers. The Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport lags behind in user satisfaction. The i40's weak residual values are a double-edged sword—they make it cheap to buy but less attractive for resale. For sensible, fuss-free family motoring, the i40 is hard to beat at the price.
