Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
A truly capable workhorse	The single-cab Utility model has a lower towing limit than the rest of the range
Plenty of creature comforts for lifestyle customers	Expect high fuel bills compared with an SUV's
Excellent safety rating	Expensive to insure

Quick Summary

The Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) represents a significant evolution in the pickup truck market, combining genuine utility with lifestyle appeal. This third-generation model arrives at an opportune time, with many competitors withdrawing from the UK market, including Volkswagen Amarok, Mercedes-Benz X-Class, and Mitsubishi L200. The D-Max offers three body styles—single cab, extended cab, and double cab—each catering to different needs, from pure workhorses to family-friendly vehicles. The cabin is notably more car-like than previous generations, featuring soft-touch plastics, snug seats with extensive adjustment, and modern infotainment systems on higher trims with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Powered by a 1.9-litre four-cylinder diesel engine producing 162bhp, the D-Max delivers respectable performance with either manual or automatic transmission options. Whilst fuel consumption sits between 30.7 and 33.6mpg officially, real-world figures often reach the high 20s. All models except the entry-level Utility feature four-wheel drive with impressive off-road capability, including hill descent control and 800mm wading depth. With a wide range of trim levels—from utilitarian Utility models to the lifestyle-focused V-Cross—there's a D-Max for most needs. Running costs include fixed VED at £265 annually, attractive company car tax rates if employer-provided, and biennial servicing every 12,000 miles.

Best for: Buyers seeking a capable workhorse with modern comforts, those wanting to use a truck as both a work vehicle and weekend family transport, and customers looking for excellent off-road ability and towing capacity.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising fuel economy over capability, those seeking lower insurance premiums, or buyers requiring the premium badge appeal of a Toyota Hilux.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the D-Max if: You need a capable workhorse with modern comforts, want to use a truck for both work and weekend family duties, or seek excellent off-road ability and towing capacity.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise fuel economy, seek lower insurance premiums, or desire the premium badge appeal of a Toyota Hilux.

Competitive Position: The Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) is a strong contender in the pickup truck market, offering excellent value and capability at a competitive price point. Whilst the Toyota Hilux commands a premium and boasts marginally higher user ratings, the D-Max delivers superior value for money with more creature comforts and modern technology. The Ford Ranger offers better value deals, but the D-Max's improved quality, features, and recent market timing give it a distinct advantage. For buyers seeking a genuine workhorse with lifestyle credentials, the D-Max represents a highly sensible and capable choice.
