Jaecoo 7 Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Genuinely impressive cabin quality	Petrol-only powertrains unpolished
Roomy and practical	Intrusive driver assistance features
Lots of car and kit for the money	Some ergonomic oversights

Quick Summary

The Jaecoo 7 is a five-seater midsize SUV that sits between a Range Rover Evoque and Velar in size, offering a compelling proposition for budget-conscious buyers seeking premium styling and interior quality. Launched in January 2025 by Chinese manufacturer Chery International, the Jaecoo 7 has rapidly become one of the UK's best-selling cars, thanks to its impressive cabin quality, spacious interior, and exceptional value for money. The car comes with three powertrain options: a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with front or four-wheel drive, and a plug-in hybrid combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with electric motors for 201bhp and up to 56 miles of electric-only range.

The Jaecoo 7 delivers a premium feel with high-quality materials, thoughtful design touches, and comprehensive standard equipment including a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and a 540-degree surround-view camera. Boot space is generous at 500 litres (412 litres in hybrid and 4WD models), and rear passengers enjoy ample legroom. However, the petrol models suffer from unpolished software affecting throttle response and gearbox engagement, resulting in jerky, all-or-nothing power delivery. The plug-in hybrid offers smoother performance and quieter operation. Overall, the Jaecoo 7 represents excellent value with impressive practicality and luxury equipment, though driving dynamics are merely adequate and some driver assistance systems feel intrusive.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious, well-equipped SUV with premium interior quality, and those interested in plug-in hybrid technology for lower running costs.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising refined driving dynamics, polished petrol engine performance, or those seeking the premium badge appeal of established European rivals.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Jaecoo 7 if: You're seeking exceptional value for money, want a spacious and well-equipped SUV with premium interior quality, or are interested in plug-in hybrid technology with low running costs.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise refined driving dynamics, polished petrol engine performance, or the established premium badge appeal of European rivals like Range Rover or Audi.

Competitive Position: The Jaecoo 7 offers compelling value in the midsize SUV segment, undercutting rivals like the Hyundai Tucson by thousands whilst delivering impressive interior quality and comprehensive standard equipment. However, it falls short of competitors in driving refinement and overall polish. The plug-in hybrid variant provides a smoother, quieter experience than the petrol models, making it the more accomplished choice. Whilst the Jaecoo 7 may lack the premium credentials of the Range Rover Evoque or the driving dynamics of the Ford Kuga, its combination of style, space, practicality, and affordability makes it an attractive proposition for budget-conscious buyers willing to overlook some software refinement issues.
