Jaguar E-Pace (2017-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Decent handling | Overly firm ride |
| Stylish design | Reliability concerns |
| Good standard equipment | Interior quality not what you'd expect |
Quick Summary
The Jaguar E-Pace (2017-2024) is a premium compact SUV designed to blend the brand's sporting heritage with family-friendly practicality. As a rival to the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Volvo XC40, it boasts a stylish exterior and a well-equipped, comfortable cabin. Practicality is a strong point, with generous space for passengers and a large boot capacity of 577 litres (or 601 litres in post-2021 models), surpassing many key competitors. However, while the interior looks smart, some of the materials used don't feel as premium as those in rival cars.
Marketed as a sporty SUV, the E-Pace's driving experience is mixed. The handling is composed, but the ride is overly firm, particularly on larger wheels, and it doesn’t feel as agile as other Jaguar models. A range of 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines were offered, with later models introducing a plug-in hybrid. Running costs can be high, with petrol models struggling to exceed 30mpg. While early cars missed out on Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, models from late 2020 feature a much-improved Pivi Pro infotainment system. It's a handsome and practical choice, but one that is ultimately outshone by more talented rivals.
Best for: Buyers who prioritise stylish design, the appeal of the Jaguar badge, and generous boot space in a compact SUV package.
Not ideal for: Those seeking a cosseting, comfortable ride, the highest level of interior quality, or the most engaging driving dynamics in its class.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jaguar E-Pace | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.0% | 4.1/5 |
| Audi Q3 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.8% | 4.3/5 |
| Range Rover Evoque | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.3% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X1 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.4% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the E-Pace if: You are drawn to its stylish looks and the prestige of the Jaguar badge, and you require the excellent practicality offered by its large boot.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise a comfortable ride, superior interior quality, or a more rewarding driving experience, as rivals often perform better in these areas.
Competitive Position: The Jaguar E-Pace is a visually appealing and practical option in the crowded premium compact SUV segment. It stands out with its desirable badge and generous standard equipment. However, it is let down by a firm ride and an interior that doesn't quite match the quality of class leaders like the Audi Q3. While it's a competent car, it fails to excel in any one area, making it a choice of the heart over the head when compared to more well-rounded alternatives.

4.9 Overall rating
(11 reviews)Drives beautifully and corners perfectly unfortunately the boot is too small for my golf clubs.
Very good value with high spec and a lot of optional extras were included as standard.
Its a great match for me and my family.
The E-Pace we tested and subsequently bought is highly equipped and a pleasure to drive. The Heads Up Display its a terrific bonus if you get that option as are the 360 degree cameras and blind spot indicators. The 2.0 diesel (180) automatic has a good balance of performance and economy with a lively pick up on acceleration and a smooth 9 speed auto. Personally I wouldn’t consider the manual transmission unless I was buying a sports car. If it’s luxury you want in town and city stick to the automatic. I have had 23 Jags over the years so I’ve got plenty to compare it to and although the SUVs in the range don’t give the same style and handling as the saloons and sports cars they still look and feel more exclusive than their BMW and Mercedes competitors. If you are looking for a luxury SUV that is stylish, comfortable and handles better on road than most, then you might want to consider the Jag.
It was a lovely drive, beautiful car , very nice
