Jaguar E-Pace (2017-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Decent handling | Overly firm ride |
| Stylish design | Reliability concerns |
| Good standard equipment | Interior quality not what you'd expect |
Quick Summary
The Jaguar E-Pace, launched in 2017 and facelifted in late 2020, is Jaguar's smaller premium compact SUV, designed to bring the brand's luxury and performance appeal to a broader market. Sharing mechanicals with the Range Rover Evoque, it aims to deliver a sporty driving experience within a practical family package, competing against models like the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Volvo XC40. It features a stylish exterior and a smart-looking interior, though some materials may not feel as premium as rivals.
Practicality is a strong suit, with decent space for adults and a very good boot of 577-601 litres, surpassing some competitors. While handling is composed, the ride can be firm, especially with larger wheels, and it feels less agile than other Jaguars. A range of 2.0-litre diesel and petrol engines were available, including a plug-in hybrid (P300e) post-2020. Running costs vary; diesels offer better MPG, but petrols can be thirsty. Servicing costs are on the higher side, and insurance groups are generally elevated. Early models feature the Touch Pro infotainment, while later ones benefit from the improved Pivi Pro system, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto becoming standard from late 2019.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish compact SUV with a prestigious badge, good practicality (especially boot space), and decent standard equipment, particularly those considering later models with improved infotainment.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising a plush, comfortable ride, top-tier interior material quality, the finest agility, or lower running and insurance costs compared to some rivals. Early adopters who need smartphone integration might also be disappointed before late 2019 models.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jaguar E-PACE | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.9% | 4.1/5 |
| Audi Q3 | 4/5 | 4.1/5 | 34.0% | 4.3/5 |
| Land Rover Range Rover Evoque | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 34.6% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X1 | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 32.7% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the E-Pace if: You're looking for a stylish compact SUV with a prestigious badge, good boot space, and decent standard equipment, particularly if you find a later model with the improved infotainment.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise a comfortable ride, premium interior quality (especially compared to some rivals), agile handling, or lower running and insurance costs.
Competitive Position: The Jaguar E-Pace is a stylish and practical compact SUV with a prestigious badge, offering good boot space and decent standard equipment. While it provides composed handling, its firm ride and interior quality might not match the class best, and running costs can be higher than some rivals. It's a strong contender for those drawn to its design and brand cachet, especially for later models with improved technology, but buyers seeking ultimate comfort, agility, or lower overall costs might find better alternatives.

4.9 Overall rating
(11 reviews)Drives beautifully and corners perfectly unfortunately the boot is too small for my golf clubs.
Very good value with high spec and a lot of optional extras were included as standard.
Its a great match for me and my family.
The E-Pace we tested and subsequently bought is highly equipped and a pleasure to drive. The Heads Up Display its a terrific bonus if you get that option as are the 360 degree cameras and blind spot indicators. The 2.0 diesel (180) automatic has a good balance of performance and economy with a lively pick up on acceleration and a smooth 9 speed auto. Personally I wouldn’t consider the manual transmission unless I was buying a sports car. If it’s luxury you want in town and city stick to the automatic. I have had 23 Jags over the years so I’ve got plenty to compare it to and although the SUVs in the range don’t give the same style and handling as the saloons and sports cars they still look and feel more exclusive than their BMW and Mercedes competitors. If you are looking for a luxury SUV that is stylish, comfortable and handles better on road than most, then you might want to consider the Jag.
It was a lovely drive, beautiful car , very nice
