Jaguar F-Pace (2016-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Great to drive	High running costs with V8 models
Good standard equipment	Poor interior quality on pre-facelift cars
Roomy and practical	Firm ride, especially on larger wheels

Quick Summary

The Jaguar F-Pace (2016-present) is Jaguar's first venture into the premium midsize SUV market, combining sharp handling and responsive steering with practical family-car versatility. Launched as a "performance crossover," it delivers engaging driving dynamics that rival established competitors like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3. The F-Pace offers an impressive engine line-up ranging from economical four-cylinder diesels to a thrilling supercharged V8 SVR variant, with all-wheel-drive and automatic transmission on most models. Boot space exceeds 600 litres on most versions, though the P400e plug-in hybrid reduces this to 485 litres due to battery placement.

A significant 2021 facelift transformed the F-Pace's interior quality and infotainment system, bringing it in line with premium rivals. The Pivi Pro touchscreen is intuitive and well-designed, whilst materials and build quality now feel genuinely classy. However, the firm ride—particularly on larger wheels—and high running costs on V8 models are considerations. Early examples suffer from dated interiors and clunky infotainment, making later models considerably more desirable. The F-Pace remains an engaging family SUV that balances heart and head appeal, though it cannot quite match the Porsche Macan for outright thrills.

Best for: Drivers seeking a premium SUV with engaging handling, families requiring spacious practicality, and those wanting a car that's enjoyable to drive without sacrificing comfort or equipment.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers concerned about running costs, those prioritising maximum comfort over sportiness, or buyers of pre-facelift models seeking modern interior quality.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the F-Pace if: You seek a premium SUV with engaging handling, require spacious practicality, or want a car that balances driving enjoyment with family-friendly comfort and equipment.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum comfort over sportiness, are concerned about running costs on V8 models, or are shopping for pre-facelift examples with dated interiors.

Competitive Position: The Jaguar F-Pace is a compelling choice in the premium midsize SUV segment, offering superior driving dynamics and engaging handling compared to most rivals. Whilst the BMW X3 edges ahead on expert rating and the Audi Q5 offers slightly better value, the F-Pace distinguishes itself through its sporty character and practical design. The 2021 facelift significantly improved interior quality, bringing it in line with German competitors. For buyers seeking a premium SUV that's genuinely fun to drive without sacrificing practicality or equipment, the F-Pace represents an excellent alternative to more conventional rivals, particularly in post-facelift form.
