Kia Soul EV (2020-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Good to drive | Boot is on the small side |
| Lots of standard equipment | Being EV-only means it's expensive to buy |
| Roomy for passengers | High insurance group |
Quick Summary
The Kia Soul EV (2020-2024) is the third generation of the Soul, and the first to be exclusively electric. Launched with a 64kWh battery offering around 250 miles of real-world range, a smaller 39.2kWh 'Urban' model was added in 2023. It's lauded for its long range at a sensible price, inheriting Kia's reputation for capable EVs. The Soul EV is enjoyable to drive, with smooth steering, a neutral chassis, and confidence-inspiring performance, whether in town or on country roads, and it handles higher speeds well.
The interior is logically laid out, featuring excellent 8-inch or 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment systems with sharp graphics and quick responses. While the boot is on the smaller side at 315 litres, there’s ample passenger headroom and a variable-height boot floor. Running costs are low due to its efficiency, and it's expected to hold its value well. Servicing is required every 10,000 miles or 12 months, and while its insurance group is a little higher than some rivals, it offers impressive equipment levels and represents good value.
Best for: Drivers wanting a long-range, efficient electric car that's good to drive, offers generous standard equipment, and retains value well.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising a large boot, those on a very strict budget (due to initial purchase price), or those concerned about higher insurance groups.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict
You should buy the Soul EV if: You want a fantastic all-round electric car with a great range, good driving dynamics, and impressive levels of standard equipment, and you appreciate strong residual values.
Consider alternatives if: You require a larger boot for family practicality, are on a very tight initial budget, or are sensitive to higher insurance groups.
Competitive Position: The Kia Soul EV (2020-2024) stands out as a highly capable and efficient electric car, offering impressive real-world range and a satisfying driving experience. While its initial price might be higher than some budget rivals like the MG ZS EV, it compensates with excellent equipment levels and strong value retention. Its main drawback is a smaller-than-average boot compared to some electric crossovers, but for those prioritising range, driving pleasure, and a well-equipped cabin, it's a compelling choice in the EV market.
