Kia Soul EV (2020-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Good to drive | Boot is on the small side |
| Lots of standard equipment | Being EV-only means it's expensive to buy |
| Roomy for passengers | High insurance group |
Quick Summary
The Kia Soul EV (2020-2024) is the third generation of Kia Soul and the first to be offered exclusively with an electric powertrain. Launched with a 64kWh battery delivering 201bhp and a 250-mile range, a smaller 39.2kWh battery option was introduced in 2023, offering 171 miles of range. The Soul EV delivers impressive real-world performance, achieving around 4.0 miles per kWh, with rapid charging providing an 80% charge in approximately 45 minutes. It combines Korean brand reliability with excellent value, offering outstanding equipment levels and a smooth, confident driving experience suitable for both town and motorway driving.
The Soul EV excels in passenger space with extraordinary headroom, though the 315-litre boot is smaller than some rivals. Running costs are very competitive, with efficient energy consumption and the option to utilise off-peak charging tariffs. Servicing is required every 10,000 miles or 12 months, with costs spreadable through Kia's Care scheme. Whilst the initial purchase price is higher than some competitors, the Soul EV's impressive equipment levels, strong build quality, and excellent driving dynamics make it a sensible choice for those seeking a practical, well-equipped electric family car.
Best for: Buyers seeking a practical, well-equipped electric family car with excellent range, smooth driving dynamics, and strong build quality; those prioritising passenger space and technology over boot capacity.
Not ideal for: Buyers requiring maximum boot space, those seeking the cheapest entry into family-sized electric vehicles, or those concerned about higher insurance premiums.

The Verdict

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum boot space, seek the cheapest entry into family-sized electric vehicles, or are concerned about higher insurance premiums.
Competitive Position: The Kia Soul EV (2020-2024) is a fantastic all-round electric car that stands out for its impressive equipment levels, excellent driving dynamics, and strong passenger space. Whilst the MG ZS EV offers better value and the Volkswagen ID.3 provides more boot space, the Soul EV's superior build quality, comprehensive standard equipment, and engaging driving experience make it an excellent choice for buyers willing to invest in a premium electric family car. It represents genuinely good value for those prioritising quality, comfort, and technology over absolute affordability.
