Kia Soul EV (2020-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Good to drive	Boot is on the small side
Lots of standard equipment	Being EV-only means it's expensive to buy
Roomy for passengers	High insurance group

Quick Summary

The Kia Soul EV (2020-2024) is the third generation of the Soul and the first to be offered exclusively with an electric powertrain. Aimed at young buyers seeking fashionable styling and electric power, it offers impressive range and equipment levels at competitive prices on the used market. Available with two battery options—a 39.2kWh Urban model with 171 miles of range and a 64kWh Explore model with up to 250 miles—the Soul EV delivers smooth, progressive steering and a neutral chassis that inspires confidence in town and on country roads. The adjustable regenerative braking system and four driving modes allow drivers to tailor performance and efficiency to their needs.

The Soul EV is very cheap to run, with excellent efficiency and the ability to charge from a 7.4kW home wallbox in under 11 hours or achieve an 80% charge from a rapid DC charger in 45 minutes. The interior is logically laid out with an excellent 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring sharp graphics and intuitive controls. Standard equipment includes satnav, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth audio streaming, with higher trims offering heated leather seats, a head-up display, and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. The main drawback is the relatively small 315-litre boot, which may disappoint those seeking proper family practicality.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable, long-range used EV with excellent equipment levels, roomy passenger accommodation, and low running costs; those who appreciate distinctive styling and smooth, confident driving dynamics.

Not ideal for: Buyers requiring a large boot for family holidays or regular cargo transport, or those seeking the lowest insurance premiums in the electric vehicle segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Soul EV if: You're seeking an affordable, long-range used EV with excellent equipment levels, roomy passenger accommodation, and low running costs, or you appreciate distinctive styling and smooth, confident driving dynamics.

Consider alternatives if: You require a large boot for family holidays or regular cargo transport, or you're seeking the lowest insurance premiums in the electric vehicle segment.

Competitive Position: The Kia Soul EV is a fantastic all-round electric car that represents excellent value on the second-hand market. Whilst rivals like the MG ZS EV offer slightly better value deals and the Peugeot e-2008 and Volkswagen ID.3 provide more spacious boots, the Soul EV stands out for its impressive range, smooth driving dynamics, and generous standard equipment. Its roomy interior, efficient performance, and low running costs make it a compelling choice for budget-conscious buyers willing to accept a smaller boot in exchange for distinctive styling and a premium driving experience.
