Kia Sportage (2010-2016) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Practical interior | Some rivals are more polished to drive |
| Still looks good, even at more than a decade old | Some owners found problems with corrosion on alloy wheels |
| Big boot | 2.0-litre models with four-wheel drive are thirsty |
Quick Summary
The Kia Sportage (2010-2016), known as the mk3, is a stylish and well-equipped family SUV that looks considerably more expensive than it actually is. When launched in late 2010, it impressed with modern, sophisticated styling both inside and out, comprehensive standard equipment including air-conditioning and electric windows across the range, and competitive pricing. The extra height compared to rivals like the Vauxhall Astra gives it a more prestigious appearance and provides occupants with a superior view of the road. With a choice of front or four-wheel drive and manual or automatic transmissions, plus an impressive engine range, it remains an appealing prospect for family buyers seeking value.
The Sportage mk3 boasts one of the largest interiors in its class, with impressive legroom and headroom, a virtually flat rear floor for comfortable five-up travel, and a cavernous 560-litre boot. Engine options include 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrols, and 1.7 and 2.0-litre diesels, all delivering reasonable performance and moderate fuel economy. A 2014 facelift brought suspension, engine, and soundproofing improvements that enhanced refinement, making later models smoother and more comfortable. Whilst handling is capable rather than engaging, the Sportage delivers competent, confident driving with strong standard equipment levels and an enviable reliability record.
Best for: Family buyers prioritising value, practicality, and style, those seeking a spacious SUV with comprehensive standard equipment, and buyers who appreciate Kia's seven-year warranty.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling dynamics or the most refined driving experience, or those concerned about potential alloy wheel corrosion on some examples.

The Verdict
You should buy the Sportage if: You're seeking a stylish, practical family SUV with comprehensive standard equipment, value for money, and a spacious interior, or you appreciate Kia's impressive warranty and reliability record.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging handling dynamics, the most refined driving experience, or wish to avoid potential alloy wheel corrosion issues.
Competitive Position: The Kia Sportage (2010-2016) is a compelling choice in the used family SUV market, offering excellent value, striking styling, and impressive practicality. Whilst the Nissan Qashqai and Honda CR-V may deliver more polished driving dynamics, the Sportage matches them on equipment and reliability whilst often undercutting them on price. Its spacious interior, large boot, and comprehensive standard features make it an excellent proposition for budget-conscious family buyers. The 2014 facelift models represent the sweet spot, offering enhanced refinement and superior infotainment systems.

Lots of small dents down passenger side of the car, appears to have been repainted on the passenger side as there's a lot of "orange peel" in the paint work compared to every other panel. Otherwise, appears to be a decent enough car
This car is beautiful. Has all yhe spec we wanted and more. Plenty of space. A good family car
I love the look of the car and the way it drives,I wish it had fold down wing mirrors like my other sportage as I have a narrow drive. Also I had heated seats in my other sportage and none in this one. It was very good value and I love the colour.
Bonnet is too big when viewed from drivers seat and I'm 6ft 1!!
