The Land Rover Discovery 4x4 was originally designed to be almost as big and as posh as the full-size Range Rover, but not quite, and thus more affordable. And that’s pretty much what it still is today. It was first released in 1989, and although the Series II came along in 1998, it was actually just a heavily revised version of the first Discovery. Land Rover repeated this trick later on: The Discovery 3 was all-new when it came along in 2004, but when it was ‘replaced’ by the Discovery 4 in 2009, the was little more than a revised version of the 3. The all-new Discovery 5 launched in 2017, competing with the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90.
