Land Rover Discovery Sport (2014-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Extremely capable off road | Poor reliability record |
| Versatile and practical seven-seat cabin | Five-seat models are worth less than seven-seaters |
| Well judged ride and handling balance | The car's weight takes the edge off its performance |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Discovery Sport (2014-present) is a highly versatile and practical SUV, notable for offering an optional seven-seat configuration that sets it apart from many premium rivals. Replacing the Freelander, it combines the cachet of a Land Rover with impressive functionality, appealing to families needing extra passenger capacity. While older models had a basic interior, post-2020 facelifts introduced a sleeker cabin with improved materials and infotainment.
On the road, it offers a comfortable ride that effectively smooths out bumps, along with confident handling thanks to good grip and intuitive steering, despite its weight. Off-road capability is, as expected for a Land Rover, excellent. Running costs can be a consideration, with petrol engines being quite thirsty and diesels achieving 35-45mpg depending on the drivetrain. Servicing costs are on par with premium brands, but the use of timing chains in later engines can reduce long-term maintenance.
Best for: Families needing a versatile and practical seven-seater SUV, buyers seeking a comfortable ride and confident handling, those who appreciate Land Rover's off-road capability and premium feel, and those considering a facelifted model for an updated interior.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising ultimate fuel economy (especially with petrol engines), those on a very tight budget for servicing, or those concerned about its reported reliability record.

The Verdict
You should buy the Discovery Sport if: You need a versatile and practical seven-seater SUV, value a comfortable ride and confident handling, appreciate Land Rover's off-road capability and premium feel, or are considering a facelifted model for an updated interior.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise ultimate fuel economy, are on a very tight budget for servicing, or are concerned about its reported reliability record.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Discovery Sport (2014-present) stands out in the premium compact SUV segment primarily due to its versatile optional seven-seat configuration, a feature often lacking in direct rivals. It offers a compelling blend of practicality, a comfortable and refined driving experience, and Land Rover's renowned off-road prowess. While its running costs and reliability reputation might be points of consideration, its strong resale value (especially for seven-seat versions) and updated interiors in later models make it a highly desirable and well-rounded choice for families seeking a premium, capable, and adaptable vehicle.

Pure class, so comfortable and great handling, you wont be disappointed.
Very nice to drive, relatively economical for a four wheel drive car, good brand.
Load space poor compared to similar cars therefore discounted as an option for us.
