Land Rover Discovery Sport Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Extremely capable off road | Poor reliability record |
| Versatile and practical seven-seat cabin | Third row is best for children |
| Well judged ride and handling balance | The car's weight takes the edge off its performance |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a versatile premium compact SUV that stands out for offering optional seven-seat practicality, a feature rarely found in rivals at this price point. Launched in 2014 as a replacement for the Freelander, it combines genuine off-road capability with a comfortable, well-appointed cabin that improves significantly in later models. The commanding driving position, spacious middle row, and flexible seating arrangements make it one of the most practical premium SUVs of its size, with five-seat models offering 780 litres of boot space or 1,574 litres with seats folded.
The Discovery Sport delivers a well-balanced ride and handling experience, with a comfortable setup that suits longer journeys and family duties. Current engine options include D165 and D200 mild-hybrid diesels, plus the P270e plug-in hybrid, with the D200 offering the best all-round performance. However, potential buyers should be aware of the model's poor reliability reputation and budget accordingly for servicing costs at Land Rover specialists. Despite these concerns, the Discovery Sport remains an appealing choice for those seeking versatility, practicality, and off-road ability in a premium package.
Best for: Families needing seven-seat versatility, buyers seeking premium off-road capability, and those prioritising practical flexibility with a commanding driving position.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers concerned about reliability, those seeking the lowest running costs, or drivers prioritising outright performance over comfort.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Land Rover Discovery Sport | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 41.2% | 4.5/5 |

| BMW X3 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 37.9% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Discovery Sport if: You need seven-seat versatility, seek premium off-road capability, or prioritise practical flexibility with a commanding driving position.
Consider alternatives if: You are concerned about reliability, seeking the lowest running costs, or prioritising outright performance over comfort.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a strong contender in the premium compact SUV segment, offering exceptional versatility and genuine off-road ability that rivals struggle to match. Whilst the BMW X3 edges ahead on expert rating and the Mercedes-Benz GLB offers better value, the Discovery Sport's seven-seat practicality and commanding presence remain compelling. Its well-balanced ride, spacious cabin, and flexible seating arrangements make it an excellent choice for families, though potential buyers must weigh its poor reliability reputation against its considerable practical advantages and premium appeal.
