Land Rover Range Rover (2012-2021) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Goes anywhere in style and luxury	Seriously expensive to buy and run
Huge interior of long-wheelbase model	Its sheer size can be intimidating
Very able off road	Reliability worries could keep you awake at night

Quick Summary

The Land Rover Range Rover (2012-2021), known as the L405, is the pinnacle of luxury SUVs, combining off-road capability with uncompromising comfort and refinement. This generation represents the modern Range Rover philosophy: a car that can tackle challenging terrain whilst swaddling occupants in leather, wood, and cutting-edge technology. With five seats and a cavernous 900-litre boot (898 litres in the P400e hybrid), it offers palatial space for passengers and luggage alike. The driving experience is transformative—in standard mode, it feels like piloting a small building, but engage Dynamic mode and it performs a miraculous transformation, handling remarkably well for its size and weight.

Engine options range from the economical D250 diesel (246bhp, 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds) to the rapid P565 petrol (5.1 seconds), with the newer Ingenium straight-six diesels offering up to 33mpg and compliance with Euro 6d-final emissions standards. However, running costs are substantial: fuel consumption rarely exceeds 30mpg, servicing is expensive and required annually or every 16,000 miles, and parts are costly. Reliability concerns are a significant consideration. Despite these drawbacks, the Range Rover remains unmatched in combining off-road prowess with on-road luxury, offering an experience few competitors can replicate.

Best for: Affluent buyers seeking ultimate luxury and off-road capability, those wanting a prestigious statement vehicle, and drivers prioritising comfort and refinement above all else.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those concerned about fuel economy and running costs, drivers prioritising reliability, or anyone intimidated by the vehicle's substantial size.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Range Rover if: You're seeking ultimate luxury combined with genuine off-road capability, prioritise comfort and refinement, and have the budget to cover substantial running costs.

Consider alternatives if: You're concerned about fuel economy and servicing costs, prioritise reliability, or find the vehicle's size daunting for everyday driving.

Competitive Position: The Land Rover Range Rover (2012-2021) stands as the benchmark for luxury SUVs, offering unparalleled off-road ability paired with sumptuous on-road comfort. Whilst the Audi Q7 scores higher for expert rating and the Mercedes-Benz GLS provides smoother motorway refinement, neither matches the Range Rover's off-road credentials or distinctive presence. The Bentley Bentayga offers greater exclusivity but at significantly higher cost. For buyers wanting a vehicle that genuinely goes anywhere whilst maintaining plutocratic progress on tarmac, the Range Rover remains unmatched, though potential owners must accept its substantial running costs and reliability concerns as the price of admission to this elite segment.
