Land Rover Range Rover Sport (2013-2022) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Extremely capable on and off road	Reliability is a worry
Luxurious and refined to travel in	Budget for high running costs
The most powerful models are extremely quick	Seven-seat versions are cramped in the third row

Quick Summary

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport (2013-2022), codenamed L494, is a second-generation luxury SUV that competes with premium rivals such as the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. Launched in 2013 and facelifted in 2018, it combines a sportier swept-back design with the practicality of a full-size Range Rover. The Sport can be specified with seven seats as an option, though the two rearmost seats are only suitable for small children and eliminate the spare wheel. All versions feature a plush, classy cabin with plenty of toys and space in the rear and boot, though not quite matching the practicality of rivals like the Audi Q7 or Volvo XC90.

The Range Rover Sport excels on the road with a smooth, settled ride courtesy of standard air suspension, and it's masterfully capable off-road with variable ride height and clever electronic systems for extreme conditions. The engine line-up evolved throughout the L494's life, starting with turbodiesel six- and eight-cylinder options, a supercharged petrol V8, and later adding hybrids and smaller turbo petrol engines. However, running costs are substantial, with mixed driving typically yielding around 35mpg, whilst consumables like tyres and brake pads are expensive. Reliability concerns and high maintenance costs mean a comprehensive warranty is essential; Land Rover approved used cars offer 12 months of warranty with unlimited claims and 24/7 roadside assistance.

Best for: Buyers seeking a luxurious, refined, and capable premium SUV with impressive off-road credentials and those willing to invest in a comprehensive warranty to mitigate reliability risks.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers concerned about running costs and reliability, or those prioritising maximum practicality in the third row of seating.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Range Rover Sport if: You're seeking a luxurious, refined, and capable premium SUV with impressive off-road credentials and are willing to invest in a comprehensive warranty to mitigate reliability risks.

Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious and concerned about running costs and reliability, or you prioritise maximum practicality in the third row of seating.

Competitive Position: The Land Rover Range Rover Sport (2013-2022) is a formidable contender in the premium SUV market, offering exceptional on and off-road capability combined with luxury and refinement. Whilst it matches rivals like the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne for performance and user satisfaction, the Audi Q7 edges ahead with superior reliability and practicality. The Range Rover Sport's key differentiator is its unmatched off-road prowess and sense of occasion, though potential buyers must carefully weigh this against reliability concerns and substantial running costs. With the right warranty and a well-maintained example, it remains one of Land Rover's most desirable and capable vehicles.
