Lexus RX 450h (2015-2023) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| The hybrid is fuel-efficient for a luxury SUV | The seven-seat RX L is thirstier than the five-seat RX |

| Superb service from Lexus dealers | The RX 200 t is thirsty |
Quick Summary
The Lexus RX 450h (2015-2023) is a luxury SUV that prioritises comfort, refinement, and reliability over aggressive styling or sporty dynamics. The fourth generation, introduced in 2015 and replaced in 2023, offered a hybrid RX 450h and a short-lived RX 200t petrol. It provides ample space for five, with a longer RX L version from 2018 accommodating seven, albeit with limited space in the rearmost seats. The 453-litre boot is adequate but not class-leading. The RX majors on a quiet, absorbent ride, especially around town on electric power.
Running costs are reasonable for a large 4x4, with the RX 450h achieving 35.7-36.2mpg (WLTP), though insurance premiums are high, particularly for hybrid models. The RX is well-made, exceptionally reliable, and packed with safety features, offering a generally painless ownership experience backed by excellent dealer service. While not the most exciting to drive or visually striking, its blend of luxury, efficiency, and dependability makes it a compelling choice for buyers seeking an understated premium SUV. Early 200t models offer a keenly priced used option, while the 450h provides better performance and economy.
Best for: Drivers prioritising comfort, refinement, reliability, safety, excellent customer service, and competitive running costs for a large luxury SUV.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking aggressive styling, the most dynamic driving experience, a truly spacious seven-seater, or those who prefer plug-in hybrid or full EV options.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lexus RX 450h | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 22.0% | 4.2/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the RX if: You're looking for a well-made, exceptionally reliable, comfortable, fuel-efficient, and safe luxury SUV with excellent dealer service, and a painless ownership experience.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise aggressive styling, cutting-edge driving dynamics, or need a genuinely spacious seven-seater, or prefer plug-in hybrid/EV options.
Competitive Position: The Lexus RX 450h (2015-2023) positions itself as a luxury SUV that prioritises comfort, refinement, reliability, and excellent customer service over aggressive styling or sporty driving dynamics. It offers competitive fuel economy for a large 4x4, especially the hybrid, making it a sensible choice for those seeking lower running costs in its class. While it may not match rivals like the BMW X5 or Porsche Cayenne for driving excitement, its focus on comfort and a premium ownership experience, coupled with strong safety features, makes it a compelling option for a specific type of buyer. The availability of a (less efficient) 200t petrol also offers a more budget-friendly entry into the luxury SUV segment.

4.8 Overall rating
(21 reviews)The car is superbly appointed and built. The main issue is to do with the relatively small mileage you get on battery power, and the motorway mpg is not great. However, it is a fantastic car.
Superb styling. Great performance. Economical. Powerful. Comfortable. Luxury extras
Fantastic quality if a little overpriced. Only car to buy
2016 was the year that changed the design and one or two features which enhanced the look and funtionality to an already reliable and comfortable car.
Its a beautifully crafted car with a bullet proof engine.
