Lexus RX 450h (2015-2023) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| The hybrid is fuel-efficient for a luxury SUV | The seven-seat RX L is thirstier than the five-seat RX |
| Well-deserved reputation for reliability | Doesn't drive as well as a BMW X5 or Porsche Cayenne |
| Superb service from Lexus dealers | The RX 200t is thirsty |
Quick Summary
The Lexus RX 450h (2015-2023), the fourth generation of this luxury SUV, is an understated choice for discerning buyers who prioritise comfort, refinement, and reliability over aggressive styling. This generation introduced the longer RX L variant in 2018, offering a genuine seven-seater option alongside the standard five-seater. The hybrid powertrain delivers impressive fuel economy of 35.7-36.2mpg for a two-tonne 4x4, whilst the discontinued RX 200t turbocharged petrol proved less popular due to thirstier consumption and lower performance.
The RX majors on comfort with an absorbent ride and exceptional quietness, particularly in town where the hybrid glides on electric power. Well-equipped across all trim levels—from S through to Premier—the RX offers dual-zone climate control, satellite navigation, leather upholstery, and advanced safety features as standard. Whilst not as sharp to drive as rivals like the BMW X5, the RX compensates with outstanding reliability, a customer-focused dealer network, and luxurious appointments. The RX L adds practicality for families needing extra space, though at a slight fuel economy penalty.
Best for: Buyers seeking a reliable, comfortable, and fuel-efficient luxury SUV, families wanting seven-seat practicality, and those who value dealer support and low-stress ownership.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising dynamic handling, those seeking plug-in hybrid or electric options, or buyers wanting maximum boot space in the large SUV class.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lexus RX 450h | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 29.1% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X5 | 5/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.1% | 4.5/5 |
| Audi Q7 | 5/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.7% | 4.5/5 |
| Volkswagen Touareg | 3/5 | 4.1/5 | 32.6% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the RX 450h if: You seek a reliable, comfortable, and fuel-efficient luxury SUV, need seven-seat practicality, or value dealer support and stress-free ownership.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise dynamic handling, require plug-in hybrid or electric options, or need maximum boot space in the large SUV class.
Competitive Position: The Lexus RX 450h is a strong contender in the premium large SUV market, offering exceptional reliability, comfort, and fuel efficiency at a competitive price point. Whilst the BMW X5 and Audi Q7 score higher for expert ratings and offer more dynamic driving experiences, the RX 450h delivers superior value and lower running costs. The Volkswagen Touareg lags behind in overall appeal. For buyers prioritising dependability, dealer support, and hassle-free ownership over cutting-edge performance, the RX 450h represents an excellent choice. The addition of the RX L variant provides a practical seven-seater option that few rivals can match at this price point.

4.8 Overall rating
(21 reviews)The car is superbly appointed and built. The main issue is to do with the relatively small mileage you get on battery power, and the motorway mpg is not great. However, it is a fantastic car.
Superb styling. Great performance. Economical. Powerful. Comfortable. Luxury extras
Fantastic quality if a little overpriced. Only car to buy
2016 was the year that changed the design and one or two features which enhanced the look and funtionality to an already reliable and comfortable car.
Its a beautifully crafted car with a bullet proof engine.
