MG HS (2024-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Amazing value for money | MG has a poor reputation for reliability |
| 75-mile official range for plug-in hybrid model | Underwhelming petrol engine |
| Long warranty | Poor fuel economy in entry-level model |
Quick Summary
The MG HS (2024-present) is a midsize family SUV that stands out for its exceptional value, significantly undercutting rivals like the Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai with a starting price around £25,000. Despite its budget-friendly tag, it offers a refined exterior with 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, a spacious interior, and a choice of petrol or an impressive plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, the latter boasting up to 75 miles of electric-only range.
Practicality is a strong suit, featuring a 507-litre boot and excellent rear passenger space. While the 1.5-litre petrol engine is adequate for urban driving, it can be noisy under load, and the PHEV, though powerful, delivers linear rather than exhilarating acceleration. The ride is comfortable, absorbing bumps well, but the steering lacks feedback. Technology is generous, including dual 12.3-inch screens and standard safety features, though the infotainment system's usability and sensitive driver aids can be frustrating. Overall, the HS is a solid choice for those prioritising affordability and practicality.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers, those seeking a spacious and well-equipped family SUV, company car drivers (PHEV), and buyers prioritising value over dynamic driving.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising premium badge appeal, dynamic driving experience, those bothered by sensitive driver aids or touchscreen-heavy controls, or those who need a top-tier reliability reputation.

The Verdict
You should buy the MG HS if: You're on a budget, seeking a spacious and well-equipped family SUV, or looking for an efficient PHEV for lower running costs (especially company car drivers).
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise dynamic driving, premium feel, or are sensitive to overly active driver assistance systems.
Competitive Position: The MG HS offers exceptional value in the family SUV segment, significantly undercutting rivals while providing generous space, equipment, and a competitive PHEV option. While it may not match the driving dynamics of a Kia Sportage, its affordability, practicality, and long warranty make it a compelling choice for budget-conscious buyers and those prioritising cost-effectiveness.

4.8 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Just love this car. Especially the cabin space plenty of room and a comfortable drive.
No front parking sensors on petrol models. Quite spacious inside
Great value for the amount of features included such as heated leather seats and a panoramic roof. The finish on the dashboard, seats and doors is very impressive. The steering is responsive. The drivers seat is very easy to manoeuvre into the perfect position. The sport drive is extremely punchy! Very impressive in terms of style and value for money. Used to be a BMW X1 owner but no more! Delighted with the car so an MG HS convert.
I think its the poor mans range rover .extras a plenty .getting my new mg hs exclusive on 3rd of January
MG HS Exclusive 1.5 Manual Petrol. - Excellent value - a lot of kit for the money. Manual version should come with power tail gate to make it even better but doesn’t. Lots of other cars in this bracket Mazda CX-5; Kia Sportage; Nissan Quashqai; Ford Kuga; Peugeot 2008 etc.
