MG HS (2019-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Excellent value for money	The plug-in hybrid is a lot more expensive than the rest of the range
Lots of luxury kit and safety features	Some rivals have bigger boots
Spacious and practical cabin	Antiquated infotainment

Quick Summary

The MG HS (2019-2024) is a family SUV that offers exceptional value for money, delivering the interior space of a Volkswagen Tiguan at the price of a smaller T-Roc. This comeback vehicle showcases MG's resurrection strategy, combining contemporary exterior styling with a spacious, practical, and surprisingly high-quality interior. The cabin features a leather steering wheel, solid switches, soft-touch plastics, and convincing faux leather trim. With rear seats that recline and a 60/40 split-fold configuration, plus underfloor storage, the HS proves highly practical for families, though the boot is not the largest in its class.

The 1.5-litre petrol engine delivers flexible performance with a sweet six-speed manual gearbox, whilst a seven-speed DCT automatic and plug-in hybrid option are available. The suspension strikes an excellent balance between comfort and control, making the HS a well-rounded proposition at just under £23,000. Equipment levels are impressive, with leather seats, alloy wheels, and adaptive cruise control available on entry-level models. The plug-in hybrid variant offers 32 miles of electric range and a 12% BIK tax band, making it attractive for company car users, though it adds nearly £10,000 to the price. Running costs are reasonable, with insurance groups ranging from 16 to 18 for standard models.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious family SUV, those wanting comprehensive safety kit and luxury equipment without premium pricing, and company car users considering the plug-in hybrid variant.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising the largest boot space, those seeking the most refined petrol engine, or those requiring cutting-edge infotainment technology.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the HS if: You're seeking excellent value for money, want a spacious family SUV with comprehensive safety kit and luxury equipment, or are a company car user considering the plug-in hybrid variant.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the largest boot space, require the most refined petrol engine, or demand cutting-edge infotainment technology.

Competitive Position: The MG HS (2019-2024) stands out in the family SUV market as a compelling value proposition. Whilst rivals like the Mazda CX-5 and Citroën C5 Aircross offer more refinement, and the Kia Sportage boasts excellent user ratings, the HS delivers more equipment and space at a lower price point. Its combination of contemporary styling, practical interior, comprehensive safety features, and flexible powertrain options makes it an outstanding choice for budget-conscious buyers. The plug-in hybrid variant is particularly attractive for company car users seeking lower tax implications. Used values are expected to soften as dealer stock becomes available in the wider market, making now an opportune time to purchase.
