MG HS (2024-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Amazing value for money	MG has a poor reputation for reliability
75-mile official range for plug-in hybrid model	Underwhelming petrol engine
Long warranty	Poor fuel economy in entry-level model

Quick Summary

The MG HS is a midsize family SUV that represents exceptional value in the market, starting at just £25,000 and undercutting rivals like the Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai by several thousand pounds. This latest generation offers a well-rounded package with a spacious 507-litre boot, refined exterior design, and comprehensive standard equipment including a 12.3-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. Available with either a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine or a plug-in hybrid variant with an impressive 75-mile electric range, the HS delivers excellent practicality for families seeking an affordable SUV.

Whilst the petrol engine feels underwhelming and the infotainment system prioritises touchscreen controls over physical buttons, the HS compensates with comfortable ride quality, spacious rear accommodation, and competitive running costs. The PHEV model is particularly attractive for company car drivers due to its low CO2 emissions and generous electric range. Though not the most engaging to drive compared to rivals like the Ford Kuga, the HS's combination of space, equipment, and affordability makes it a sensible choice for budget-conscious families. The long warranty provides additional peace of mind, though MG's reliability reputation remains a consideration.

Best for: Budget-conscious families seeking a spacious and well-equipped SUV, company car drivers interested in the PHEV's low emissions, and those prioritising value for money over driving dynamics.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising premium brand reputation or proven reliability, drivers seeking an engaging and dynamic driving experience, or those requiring excellent fuel economy from the petrol model.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the MG HS if: You're seeking a spacious and well-equipped SUV on a budget, interested in the PHEV's low emissions for company car purposes, or prioritising value for money over brand prestige.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise proven reliability and premium brand reputation, desire an engaging and dynamic driving experience, or require excellent fuel economy from a petrol engine.

Competitive Position: The MG HS stands out in the family SUV market for its exceptional value proposition, offering significantly lower pricing than rivals like the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson whilst delivering comparable practicality and equipment. Whilst the Kia Sportage edges ahead on expert ratings and the Hyundai Tucson scores higher on user satisfaction, the MG HS's combination of affordability, spaciousness, and the impressive PHEV option makes it highly attractive for budget-conscious buyers. However, prospective owners should weigh MG's reliability concerns against the substantial cost savings compared to more established brands.
