The MG HS is well-received by owners for its luxurious feel and spacious interior. Many drivers appreciate the comfort and ample cabin space, making it a pleasant vehicle for both short and long journeys. However, some express disappointment over the absence of certain features, such as front parking sensors on petrol variants, indicating room for improvement in its overall specification.

Brilliant car it’s huge but so easy to drive. I am trying to work my way through the 322 pages of the handbook. It has all the bells and whistles I just have to learn how to use them. I’m really pleased with this car I definitely made the right choice

MG HS (2024-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Amazing value for money | MG has a poor reputation for reliability |
| 75-mile official range for plug-in hybrid model | Underwhelming petrol engine |
| Long warranty | Poor fuel economy in entry-level model |
Quick Summary
The MG HS is a midsize family SUV that represents exceptional value in the competitive family SUV market. Starting at just £25,000, it significantly undercuts rivals like the Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai whilst offering a spacious 507-litre boot, well-appointed interior, and a choice of petrol or plug-in hybrid powertrains. The PHEV variant, priced from just over £31,000, delivers an impressive 75-mile electric range and combined fuel economy of around 565mpg, making it particularly attractive for company car drivers seeking lower Benefit-in-Kind rates.
Whilst the MG HS may not deliver the most engaging driving experience, with an underwhelming petrol engine and steering that lacks feedback, it compensates with genuine practicality, generous equipment levels, and a comprehensive warranty. The cabin is well-designed with excellent rear legroom, and technology features including a 12.3-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster come as standard. For budget-conscious families prioritising space and value over driving dynamics, the HS represents a compelling proposition, though potential buyers should consider MG's mixed reliability reputation.
Best for: Budget-conscious families seeking a spacious and well-equipped SUV, company car drivers interested in the PHEV's low emissions, and those prioritising value for money over driving engagement.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking premium brand appeal, engaging handling characteristics, or those concerned about brand reliability and resale values.

| MG HS | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 37.9% | 4.4/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the HS if: You're seeking exceptional value for money, need a spacious family SUV on a budget, or are interested in a plug-in hybrid with impressive electric range and low company car tax implications.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium brand appeal, engaging driving dynamics, or have concerns about brand reliability and long-term resale values.
Competitive Position: The MG HS is a standout value proposition in the family SUV segment, undercutting rivals by thousands of pounds whilst delivering genuine practicality and equipment. Whilst the Kia Sportage offers superior driving dynamics and the Hyundai Tucson boasts stronger reliability credentials, the MG HS's combination of affordability, spaciousness, and the exceptional PHEV option makes it highly compelling for budget-conscious buyers. The BYD Seal U, though cheaper, offers less boot space and lower overall ratings. For those prioritising value and practicality over premium feel, the HS is difficult to beat.
