MG HS (2024-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Amazing value for money | MG has a poor reputation for reliability |
| 75-mile official range for plug-in hybrid model | Underwhelming petrol engine |
| Long warranty | Poor fuel economy in entry-level model |
Quick Summary
The MG HS is a midsize family SUV that excels on value, significantly undercutting key rivals like the Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai. As MG's best-selling UK model, it delivers a spacious and practical interior with a 507-litre boot, making it a strong choice for families on a budget. It is available with either a 1.5-litre petrol engine or as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), both offering a generous level of standard equipment for the price.
The PHEV version is the highlight of the range, with an impressive official electric-only range of 75 miles that is ideal for low running costs and appealing to company car drivers. The standard petrol engine is adequate for town driving but can feel noisy and underwhelming under acceleration. While the ride is comfortable, the HS lacks the dynamic engagement of its key competitors. Its generous technology offering is hampered by an over-reliance on the touchscreen for basic controls and some overly sensitive driver assistance systems.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers, families needing space and practicality, company car drivers (PHEV model), and those wanting a long warranty.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking an engaging or dynamic driving experience, those who dislike touchscreen-heavy controls, or buyers concerned about brand reputation for reliability.

The Verdict
You should buy the HS if: Value for money is your top priority, you need a spacious family SUV, or you want the low running costs offered by the long-range PHEV model.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise an engaging driving experience, prefer physical cabin controls over touchscreens, or have concerns about brand reliability.
Competitive Position: The MG HS is a leader in value for the family SUV segment. It offers an unbeatable combination of space, equipment, and (in PHEV form) running costs for its price. While it can't match rivals like the Kia Sportage for driving dynamics or interior refinement, its sheer affordability makes it a compelling and sensible choice for pragmatic, budget-conscious buyers.

4.8 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Just love this car. Especially the cabin space plenty of room and a comfortable drive.
Great value for the amount of features included such as heated leather seats and a panoramic roof. The finish on the dashboard, seats and doors is very impressive. The steering is responsive. The drivers seat is very easy to manoeuvre into the perfect position. The sport drive is extremely punchy! Very impressive in terms of style and value for money. Used to be a BMW X1 owner but no more! Delighted with the car so an MG HS convert.
No front parking sensors on petrol models. Quite spacious inside
I think its the poor mans range rover .extras a plenty .getting my new mg hs exclusive on 3rd of January
MG HS Exclusive 1.5 Manual Petrol. - Excellent value - a lot of kit for the money. Manual version should come with power tail gate to make it even better but doesn’t. Lots of other cars in this bracket Mazda CX-5; Kia Sportage; Nissan Quashqai; Ford Kuga; Peugeot 2008 etc.
