MG4 (2022-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Fantastic value for money | Not quite as accommodating for passengers or luggage as a Volkswagen ID.3 |
| Surprisingly fun to drive | Sound system in SE models isn’t the best-sounding |
| Generously equipped, even in entry-level SE spec | Steering wheel infotainment controls a bit fiddly |
Quick Summary
The MG4 (2022-present) is an all-electric hatchback designed from the ground up as an EV, giving it a modern, futuristic look akin to the Cupra Born. Its dedicated EV platform results in an airy interior with a flat floor and slim battery pack, complemented by a modern, tablet-style dashboard. Available in SE and Trophy trims with varying battery sizes (51kWh for 218 miles, 64kWh for 270-281 miles), the range expanded in 2023 to include an Extended Range (77kWh, 323 miles) and the high-performance 429bhp XPower capable of 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds. Charging is efficient, with up to 125kW rapid DC charging.
Driving the MG4 is genuinely impressive, with rear-wheel drive (except XPower) contributing to agile handling and a lively feel. Its relatively soft suspension provides a smooth and supple ride, unusual for an EV. While less spacious than some rivals like the VW ID.3, it offers generous room compared to smaller supermini EVs at a comparable price point. Standard equipment is high, even in the entry-level SE, though the infotainment system can be fiddly. Running costs are low, with impressive residual values comparable to Porsche and Tesla, making PCP payments more affordable despite its already competitive price.
Best for: Drivers on a budget seeking an affordable yet modern EV, those looking for a fun-to-drive electric hatchback, buyers prioritising generous standard equipment, or those wanting a high-performance EV on a budget (XPower).
Not ideal for: Buyers who need maximum rear passenger and boot space (compared to ID.3), those sensitive to fiddly infotainment controls, or those expecting premium-level interior build quality from every surface.

The Verdict
You should buy the MG4 if: You're on a budget, seeking a modern, fun-to-drive electric hatchback with generous standard equipment, or looking for an affordable high-performance EV (XPower).
Consider alternatives if: You need maximum rear passenger and boot space, prefer more intuitive infotainment controls, or expect premium-level interior build quality.
Competitive Position: The MG4 (2022-present) is a game-changer in the electric car market, offering exceptional value, distinctive design, and impressive driving dynamics that challenge more expensive rivals like the Volkswagen ID.3 and Cupra Born. While its interior quality may not always match premium standards, its affordability, strong residual values, and versatile model range (from economical to high-performance) make it a highly compelling choice for budget-conscious EV buyers.
MG MG4 Review
The Overall CarGurus rating: that informs these recommendations is based on CarGurus' proprietary market data from January 2026, CarGurus expert reviews, and CarGurus user reviews.
4.8 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Cons: Compared to a Nissan Leaf the ride is a bit fidgety and not as comfortable. The interior feels dark and rear visibility is compromised. Pros: Very well priced. Plenty of power. Good looks.
Theres nothing really to which you can compare this car. The price, kit , looks and driving pleasure are all there. Even the clean design of the dashboard looks good. Nothing to beat it at the price!
Have the Trophy LR. It is well equipped with tech, but it requires a USB cable to use Android Auto and that is inconvenient. It drives well and it is responsive.
SE model needs cruise control and Satnav
Great value excellent features Looking forward to collecting soon
