MG4 (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Strong value compared with key rivals	Not as roomy or practical as a Volkswagen ID.3
Enjoyable to drive	Infotainment system is fiddly to use
Generously equipped across the range	Reliability could be an issue

Quick Summary

The MG4 is a distinctive and modern electric hatchback that marks MG's coming of age in the 21st century. Built on the Modular Scalable Platform designed solely for electric vehicles, it benefits from clever packaging with a flat floor and slim battery pack, creating an airy interior. Available in multiple configurations—from the Premium Long Range with up to 288 miles of range to the high-performance XPower with dual motors and 429bhp—the MG4 offers something for every driver. The rear-wheel-drive setup delivers agile, lively handling with a smooth, supple ride, whilst rapid charging can take the 64kWh battery from 10 to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes.

The MG4 excels in value, offering competitive pricing below many rivals whilst maintaining strong residual values. Standard equipment is generous, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and a modern touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Efficiency is respectable at 3.6 to 3.8 miles per kWh, and the 363-litre boot provides practical space. Whilst the infotainment system can be fiddly and build quality sits below premium standards, the MG4 represents excellent value against competitors like the Volkswagen ID.3, offering distinctive design, up-to-date technology, and broad specification options.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an enjoyable, well-equipped electric hatchback; those wanting strong residual values; drivers prioritising performance (XPower variant); and those needing long-range capability (Extended Range).

Not ideal for: Buyers requiring maximum interior space and practicality; those seeking premium build quality; or drivers wanting the most intuitive infotainment system.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the MG4 if: You're seeking an enjoyable, well-equipped electric hatchback with strong value; you prioritise good residual values; you want performance (XPower variant); or you need long-range capability (Extended Range).

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum interior space and practicality, seek premium build quality, or want the most intuitive infotainment system.

Competitive Position: The MG4 is a compelling proposition in the affordable electric hatchback market, offering distinctive design, strong value, and genuine driving enjoyment. Whilst the Volkswagen ID.3 provides more interior space and the Cupra Born offers sportier credentials, the MG4 undercuts both on price whilst maintaining competitive residual values. The Nissan Leaf, though highly rated by users, lags behind in expert assessment. The MG4's broad range of specifications, from efficient daily drivers to high-performance variants, combined with generous standard equipment and engaging handling, makes it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers who refuse to compromise on technology or driving dynamics.
