Mazda CX-3 (2015-2021) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Attractive looks	Not as roomy in the back or boot as some rivals
Reasonably strong engines	Doesn't drive with the verve you'd expect of a Mazda
Well equipped as standard	A Skoda Kamiq has a more comfortable ride

Quick Summary

The Mazda CX-3 (2015-2021) is a stylish compact SUV that combines attractive exterior design with a well-equipped interior. Available with a choice of two petrol engines and one diesel option, all featuring Mazda's efficient SkyActiv technology, the CX-3 delivers reasonable performance and frugal fuel consumption. The 1.8-litre diesel achieves around 55mpg in real-world driving, whilst the 2.0-litre petrol variants return approximately 40-46mpg depending on specification and gearbox choice. Insurance premiums are affordable, falling into groups 13 to 18, and servicing is straightforward with fixed-price plans available.

However, the CX-3 falls short in some key areas. Rear passenger space is cramped compared to rivals like the Seat Arona, and the 350-litre boot is merely average for the class. The driving experience, whilst competent, lacks the engaging character expected from Mazda, with disappointing ride quality and noticeable wind and road noise at motorway speeds. The cabin, though smart, features some cheaper plastics that detract from the overall impression. Despite these shortcomings, the CX-3 remains a practical and affordable option in a competitive segment.

Best for: Buyers seeking an attractive compact SUV with strong engines, good standard equipment, and reasonable running costs, particularly those prioritising style and affordability.

Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum rear legroom or boot space, drivers expecting engaging Mazda handling characteristics, or buyers sensitive to wind and road noise on motorways.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the CX-3 if: You prioritise attractive styling, strong engines, and good standard equipment, and seek an affordable compact SUV with reasonable running costs.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum rear legroom and boot space, expect engaging Mazda handling, or are sensitive to wind and road noise at motorway speeds.

Competitive Position: The Mazda CX-3 (2015-2021) is a stylish and well-equipped compact SUV that competes effectively on aesthetics and value. Whilst it matches rivals like the Renault Captur and Nissan Juke on user satisfaction, it falls short of the Seat Arona for practicality and ride comfort. The CX-3 represents a solid choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking an attractive, affordable compact SUV with decent engines and low running costs, though those prioritising space and driving dynamics may find better alternatives elsewhere in the segment.
