Mazda CX-3 (2015-2021) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Attractive looks | Not as roomy in the back or boot as some rivals |
| Reasonably strong engines | Doesn't drive with the verve you'd expect of a Mazda |
| Well equipped as standard | A Skoda Kamiq has a more comfortable ride |
Quick Summary
The Mazda CX-3 (2015-2021) is a compact crossover SUV that stands out in a crowded market with its sleek, sporty exterior. It competes with popular models like the Renault Captur and Nissan Juke. While its cabin is smart and features some high-quality materials, it doesn't feel as special as the outside and has some cheaper plastics. Practicality is a weak point; rear headroom is tight, and the 350-litre boot is only average for the class, falling short of rivals like the Skoda Kamiq.
On the road, the CX-3 is less engaging than you might expect from a Mazda, with noticeable body roll and a firm ride, although a 2018 suspension update brought improvements. The engine range, including efficient SkyActiv petrol and diesel units, performs well. Trim levels are generous, with even entry-level SE models getting alloy wheels, air-conditioning, and cruise control. Higher-spec models add desirable features like satnav, a Bose sound system, and a head-up display, making it a well-equipped used buy with reasonable running costs.
Best for: Buyers who prioritise stylish exterior design, generous standard equipment, and reasonable running costs in a compact SUV package.
Not ideal for: Those needing maximum rear passenger space or boot capacity, drivers seeking a sporty and engaging drive, or anyone wanting the most comfortable ride in the class.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda CX-3 | 3/5 | 4.3/5 | 37.5% | 4.1/5 |
| Seat Arona | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 34.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Renault Captur | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 40.4% | 4.3/5 |
| Nissan Juke | 3/5 | 4.0/5 | 33.3% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the CX-3 if: You prioritise stylish looks, generous equipment levels, and decent running costs in a compact SUV.
Consider alternatives if: You need class-leading practicality with more rear passenger room and boot space, or if you want a more comfortable and engaging driving experience.
Competitive Position: The Mazda CX-3 is a stylish and well-equipped contender in the compact SUV class, but it sacrifices practicality and driving enjoyment for its good looks. While it can't match rivals like the Seat Arona for ride and handling or the Skoda Kamiq for space, its strong equipment levels, efficient engines, and Mazda's reputation for reliability make it a solid used choice for those who value style above all else.

4.4 Overall rating
(9 reviews)The car is packed full of features that you would pay a fortune for in a European car: Sat Nav, parking sensors, lane departure warning, cruise control, electric folding mirrors and heated seats! All this at the price of a small family car. The boot could be larger but its adequate for our purposes. It compares well to tha Honda HRV and the Toyota CHR but both of them are pricier.
For a small car this has a lot going for it. I struggled to find a replacement for my Subaru Outback and this came closest to it. Yes its not got the luxury of the Subaru but it has plenty of its own. The only dessapointment is the boot size. Great little car
Compact crossover with a lot of car for your money. Some quirky little controls which could be made easier but over a comfy ride and very stylish look. Would recommend the automatic in this model. Great little manual option on the gear drive consul with the flick of a the wrist.
Lot of kit for your money but they don’t hold there value that well
Basic inside no special features not worth the money
