Mazda CX-30 (2019-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Head-turning looks, inside and out	Skyactiv-X engine is sophisticated, but sluggish in the mid-range
Good to drive	Rear legroom is in short supply
Choice of front- and four-wheel drive	Boot is small and lacks clever features

Quick Summary

The Mazda CX-30 (2019-present) is a stylish compact SUV that sits between the Mazda3 hatchback and the larger CX-5. Based on the Mazda3 platform but with a shorter wheelbase, it delivers an eye-catching design with a minimalist, well-made cabin featuring a head-up display as standard. The rotary dial infotainment system prioritises driver focus over touchscreen distraction. Two 2.0-litre petrol engines are available: the older Skyactiv-G producing 120bhp and the more advanced Skyactiv-X with 178bhp, which uses compression ignition technology for diesel-like economy (47.9mpg official, around 40mpg real-world) without diesel emissions. Both feature mild hybrid systems and deliver responsive steering, smooth ride quality, and lively handling, with an excellent manual gearbox as standard.

The CX-30 offers five trim levels—SE-L, SEL-Lux, Sport-Lux, GT Sport, and GT Sport Tech—all generously equipped with automatic headlights and wipers, adaptive cruise control, and air-conditioning. A 430-litre boot provides decent space for a small SUV, though rear legroom is compromised by the shorter wheelbase. Service intervals are every 12,500 miles or 12 months, with optional service plans available. Insurance sits in groups 12-21. Whilst the Skyactiv-X's technical sophistication is impressive, its mid-range performance is disappointing and doesn't justify its premium over the Skyactiv-G. Despite these drawbacks, the CX-30 appeals to those captivated by its striking styling and engaging driving dynamics.

Best for: Style-conscious buyers seeking a head-turning compact SUV with engaging handling, those wanting a choice of front- or four-wheel drive, and drivers who value a well-made, minimalist interior.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising rear legroom or maximum boot space, buyers seeking strong mid-range engine performance, or those wanting a traditional touchscreen infotainment system.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the CX-30 if: You're drawn to striking styling and engaging handling, seeking a choice of front- or four-wheel drive, or value a well-made, minimalist interior with intuitive controls.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise rear legroom, maximum boot space, strong mid-range engine performance, or prefer a traditional touchscreen infotainment system.

Competitive Position: The Mazda CX-30 is a stylish contender in the compact SUV segment, excelling in design and driving dynamics. However, it faces stiff competition from more practical rivals. The Skoda Karoq offers superior space and practicality with a higher overall rating, whilst the Volvo XC40 provides premium appeal. The Seat Ateca delivers comparable value. The CX-30's main strength lies in its distinctive styling and engaging drive, making it ideal for buyers willing to compromise on space for aesthetic appeal and driving enjoyment. Its mid-range engine performance and limited rear legroom are notable drawbacks compared to more spacious alternatives.
