Mazda CX-30 (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Head-turning looks, inside and out | Skyactiv-X engine is sophisticated, but sluggish in the mid-range |
| Good to drive | Rear legroom is in short supply |
| Choice of front- and four-wheel drive | Boot is small and lacks clever features |
Quick Summary
The Mazda CX-30 (2019-present) is a stylish compact SUV based on the Mazda3 platform, offering head-turning design both inside and out. With a minimalist, well-made cabin featuring a head-up display as standard and intuitive rotary dial infotainment, it delivers premium quality. Two 2.0-litre petrol engines are available: the Skyactiv-G (120bhp) and the more advanced Skyactiv-X (178bhp) with compression ignition technology. Both feature mild hybrid systems and deliver responsive steering, smooth ride quality, and lively handling, making it a pleasure to drive with one of the best manual gearshifts in its class.
However, the CX-30 has notable compromises. The sophisticated Skyactiv-X engine is disappointingly sluggish in the mid-range and doesn't justify its premium over the Skyactiv-G. Rear legroom is limited due to its shorter wheelbase, and the 430-litre boot lacks practical features like a flat floor or sliding seats. Real-world fuel economy averages around 40mpg for the Skyactiv-X and 38mpg for the Skyactiv-G. Despite these drawbacks, if you're captivated by its striking appearance and refined driving experience, the CX-30 offers excellent value and all-wheel drive availability.
Best for: Style-conscious buyers seeking a well-made, engaging compact SUV with premium interior quality and responsive handling, plus those wanting all-wheel drive capability.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising rear passenger space, large boot capacity, or maximum mid-range engine performance, or buyers seeking the most practical compact SUV in its class.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda CX-30 | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 26.8% | 4.1/5 |
| Skoda Karoq | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 28.9% | 4.5/5 |
| Seat Ateca | 4/5 | 3.8/5 | 33.6% | 4.2/5 |
| Volvo XC40 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.7% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the CX-30 if: You're captivated by striking design, seeking a well-made compact SUV with premium interior quality, responsive handling, and all-wheel drive capability.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise rear passenger space, large boot capacity, maximum mid-range engine performance, or the most practical compact SUV in its class.
Competitive Position: The Mazda CX-30 is a stylish and engaging compact SUV that excels in design and driving dynamics. However, it faces stiff competition from more practical rivals. The Skoda Karoq offers superior space and practicality with a larger boot, whilst the Volvo XC40 provides premium appeal and better value deals. The Seat Ateca delivers strong practicality at competitive pricing. The CX-30's main strength lies in its distinctive styling and refined driving experience, making it ideal for buyers willing to compromise on space for aesthetic appeal and engaging handling. Its mid-range engine sluggishness and limited rear legroom are notable drawbacks compared to more spacious alternatives.

(3 reviews)Very good value the features on it are excellent the boot could be bigger thou
The car is very well built, comfortable and very stylish inside and out!The amount of tech it comes with is mind blowing. I consider it great value for money. Would I recommend it, yes I would. Would I buy another, yes I would.
The car is superb. Mazda quality is unbelievable for the money. The exclusive line has everything you need. So much you might want to turn one or two of the assistance modes off. I love the centre consul dials. So easy to use on the move. They soon become effortless and the screen is so clear. Loads of room for me and my wife. Very very comfortable once you relax in to it. The X engine in two wheel drive form is an absolute joy. Quick and responsive at the right revs. That leaves the clutch and gear box one word. Superb. The words I would use in summary are Top Quality and great to drive. The Bose us awesome. A lot of cars these days have huge unnecessary screens that do nothing particularly well and are a pain to use. They dont even look good. Go look as a Mazda they have it right. This car is for couples and small families To compare it to a full SUV would be unfair. It is part SUV so a crossover. Dont let that put you off Go drive it. Its a dream.
