Mazda CX-30 (2019-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Head-turning looks, inside and out	Skyactiv-X engine is sophisticated, but sluggish in the mid-range
Good to drive	Rear legroom is in short supply
Choice of front- and four-wheel drive	Boot is small and lacks clever features

Quick Summary

The Mazda CX-30 (2019-present) is a stylish compact SUV based on the Mazda3 platform, offering head-turning design both inside and out. The minimalist cabin is exceptionally well made with BMW-quality feel, featuring a rotary dial infotainment system and head-up display as standard across all trim levels. With five basic grades—SE-L, SEL-Lux, Sport-Lux, GT Sport, and GT Sport Tech—the CX-30 is generously equipped with automatic headlights and wipers, adaptive cruise control, and air-conditioning on all models. An excellent six-speed manual transmission comes as standard, with a smooth six-speed automatic available, and all-wheel drive optional on Skyactiv-X models.

The CX-30 is a pleasure to drive with responsive steering, smooth ride quality, and lively handling. Two 2.0-litre petrol engines are available: the older Skyactiv-G (120bhp) and the more advanced Skyactiv-X (178bhp) with compression ignition technology, delivering diesel-like economy of 47.9mpg officially, though real-world figures average around 40mpg. Both engines feature Mazda's M Hybrid mild hybrid system. However, neither engine is particularly perky mid-range, and the Skyactiv-X's economy gains don't justify its extra cost. The shorter wheelbase compromises rear legroom compared to rivals, and the 430-litre boot lacks practical features like a flat floor when seats fold. Service intervals are every 12,500 miles or 12 months, with insurance groups ranging from 12-21.

Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, well-made compact SUV with engaging driving dynamics, those wanting a choice of drivetrains, and drivers who appreciate minimalist, intuitive interior design.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising rear passenger space or maximum boot practicality, buyers needing mid-range engine performance, or those seeking the best value in the compact SUV segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the CX-30 if: You're seeking a stylish, well-made compact SUV with engaging driving dynamics, want a choice of drivetrains, or appreciate minimalist, intuitive interior design.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise rear passenger space, maximum boot practicality, mid-range engine performance, or the best value in the compact SUV segment.

Competitive Position: The Mazda CX-30 (2019-present) is a distinctive compact SUV that excels in design and driving engagement. However, it faces stiff competition from more practical rivals like the Skoda Karoq, which offers superior space and value, and the Volvo XC40, which provides a more premium feel. The Seat Ateca offers comparable practicality at a similar price point. The CX-30's main strength lies in its styling and driving experience rather than practicality or value, making it ideal for buyers willing to prioritise aesthetics and handling over space and economy.
