Mazda CX-5 (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Good ride comfort	No hybrid or plug-in hybrid options
Roomy and practical interior	Engine lacks a bit of power
Handles well for an SUV	Over-reliance on touchscreen for some core controls

Quick Summary

The Mazda CX-5 (2026) is a family-favourite SUV that represents a fine evolution of its predecessor. Measuring nearly 4.7 metres long, it positions itself at the larger end of the family SUV sector, offering exceptional practicality with a 583-litre boot expanding to 2,019 litres with rear seats folded. The interior is significantly more spacious than before, particularly for rear passengers who enjoy limousine-like legroom. The new design feels sleeker and more modern, whilst maintaining the familiar character Mazda loyalists appreciate. It features Google built-in infotainment with Google Maps integration, though the button-free interface takes some adjustment.

The CX-5 remains proudly petrol-powered with a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated engine producing 139bhp, offering a more engaging, engine-first driving experience than many rivals. Whilst acceleration to 62mph takes 10.5 seconds and fuel economy of 40mpg (front-wheel drive) or 38mpg (all-wheel drive) isn't class-leading, the car delivers refined handling and a compliant ride. Available in four trim levels with front-wheel or all-wheel-drive options, it's well-priced from under £32,000. However, the lack of hybrid technology means higher CO2 emissions and less impressive fuel economy compared to electrified competitors.

Best for: Mazda loyalists seeking a spacious, practical family SUV with engaging driving dynamics, and buyers prioritising comfort and interior space over cutting-edge powertrain technology.

Not ideal for: Company car drivers concerned about CO2 emissions, those seeking hybrid or plug-in hybrid efficiency, or drivers wanting maximum engine responsiveness and power.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the CX-5 if: You're a Mazda loyalist seeking a spacious, practical family SUV with engaging driving dynamics, or prioritise comfort and interior space over cutting-edge powertrain technology.

Consider alternatives if: You're a company car driver concerned about CO2 emissions, seeking hybrid or plug-in hybrid efficiency, or wanting maximum engine responsiveness and power.

Competitive Position: The Mazda CX-5 (2026) is a strong contender in the family SUV market, offering exceptional practicality, a refined ride, and engaging handling that sets it apart from more utilitarian rivals. Whilst it matches the Volkswagen Tiguan and MG HS on overall ratings, the Kia Sportage edges ahead with a higher expert rating. The CX-5's key differentiator is its driving dynamics and comfort, though potential buyers should note its lack of hybrid options and modest power output compared to electrified competitors. For those valuing traditional petrol-powered reliability and Mazda's renowned driving engagement, it remains an excellent choice.
